According to Peter K's book "Canon Rangefinder Lenses", and depending on which version of the lens you have, it accepts either a 36mm push-on Series VI adapter or a 34mm screw-in Series VI adapter. The adapter unscrews in two halves to allow a filter to be inserted in the middle. The hood also screws into the adapter, and the Canon hood was a rectangular design used on both the 50/1.8 and the 35/3.2.
Canon's strategy was Series filters mounted in the lens hoods, in the case of this lens a Series VI filter.
If it has threads, they are 34mm. If not, you need a slip-on 36mm series adapter, from Canon, Kodak, Tiffen, or Ednalite. If you don't plan to use the Canon hood, Series V filters will do, but the matching Canon hood is Series VI sized.
