I didn't sell my Leica III but bought a M2 which I wanted to use more on the street since it operating faster... To make the long story short now I carry two cameras instead of one :bang:, and my Barnack is the one mainly in use. I just can't go out w/o it. Finally I decided to load the M2 with 100 ISO and the Barnack with 400 ISO film and shoot first half of a day the M2 and second half - the III...

enjoyed your 1990 trans-Siberia Flickr, long journey during very turbulent times. perhaps some descriptions, what and where would make it perfect

Here's my IIIa from 1935 (#156315) and an Elmar 3.5cm f/3.5 from about 1937 (#400018). The camera's rangefinder is bright and accurate, and the curtains appear to be recently replaced. The lens is a very nice example, with no cleaning marks and a minimal amount of internal haze.

Thanks, Jarno!
My trans-Siberian photos are part of an even longer travel (about three weeks in July) from Zagreb to Beijing by train and back (by plane). You can see the Chinese part at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dotur/sets/72157624662937089/.
Trans-Siberian shots were taken mostly from the train, during those 10 summer days on the Siberian tracks. Photos and faint memories are all I have now - there is no written diary, and I prefer it that way...

Watch that step!
IIIc (1941)
Summitar (1941)
INTERESTING CAMERA HERE.............
Note it's a "Flat Top" Leica IIIC but a WW2 numbered body and matching era lens.
It's a FACTORY REBUILD/REPLACEMENT top plate camera, note the (Nr.) instead of No. on regular cameras, all replacement cameras had the Nr. engravings.
(see GMBH engravings also, so it's post 1954 era.)
Interesting, they are not really rare or collectable, but I guess it would fall under that category of a strange conversions?

Thank you Tom, for the information about my "new" IIIc and first Barnack.
It is a lot of fun to take pictures with her.
Hello Nils,
Yes, it's like you have a brand new 1942 Leica, at least it was a FACTORY REBUILD replacement top plate, done at the factory post 1954, (oddly enough they DIDN'T get the camera upgraded to a IIIFBD, they didn't spend any extra $$$) so it was 100% a damage issue that the factory corrected with a new top plate, which makes it somewhat uncommon too, what looks like a very nice uncoated Summitar is really one of Leica's facinating lenses and great to shoot with, I love them!
Happy Shooting!

IIIf Black Dial with Jupiter 12 and homemade, taped-on viewfinder. My "real" finder is coming in a couple of days with a Jupiter 8. Now to save my pennies for a 2.8 Elmar or Summitar, a long lens and then maybe a SYOOM Leicavit (if I can find a working one).

Erik, I've never even seen a black bright-line finder before.
I know black SBLOO's exists, but I've never seen another black SBOOI.
The black/chrome SCNOO is also damn rare. I've been looking for one for many years.

It looks somewhat familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
The earliest shutter-speed dials of the I and the II had a larger diameter than the later ones. As the large dials can touch the finger during the exposure, Leitz decided to mount smaller ones.

Erik,
About your conversion shown above. Is it a 'I to II' or the mad 'II to II'?
I see that the housing is the higher type with the protruding accesory shoe.
Often wondered why they fitted these on cameras that were not to be syncronised (as in the 'f' series). I can only assume that either the factory had run out of the lower type or that all post war conversions have the same housing? Mine do, whether syncronised or not.
Judging by the finish on the shutter release this looks like a late conversion. I guess you have no idea of the date?
