Nice one Erik!
What state are the curtains in? Is this one going to be a 'user'?

No, absolutely not. The camera is in a near mint condition, but still has it's original red curtains. The curtains are quite sticky however. Most IIIc's that were made with red curtains had them replaced; Leitz offered a free service to replace them after the war. This camera was obviously never send in for repairs. The red curtains were a left-over from an experiment with material from Kodak/Graflex from about 1936. Leitz used it in 1941 when their usual material was difficult to get because of the war. Later in the war Leitz used silk from parachutes for their shutters. The red curtains are inferior. They are funny, I like to keep the camera that way. IIIc's with red curtains are quite rare actually.

Erik, your beautiful 39 Summitar will go nicely with your red curtain. I also have a 41/42 IIIc, 3000 units ahead of yours but the red curtain has been replaced. I have been looking off and on for a nice early forties Summitar. I am not in a hurry, I have a 46 Elmar to keep the IIIc busy.

I used to have a double red curtain IIIc from 1942, with an 'N-L' engraving on the top plate. Still had the original strap rings on it too.
Must have been years ago that I offered it up for sale here, and it never went until I sold it for a regular IIIc price to a lurking member in England. Never saw it again. I may have pictures of it somewhere I when I remember to look for them, I'll post them on my website.

Johan, what is a "double red curtain IIIc"? This one too has two red curtains, but the material of the curtain is red only at one side. The first curtain has its red side towards the lens and the second curtain towards the back of the camera.

Mojo, in fact they came together! I will use the Summitar on another camera.

Erik,
mine had two red curtains, both facing front. I have seen many cameras online that had only one red curtain, but maybe those cameras had one curtain facing forward and one facing backward too, like your camera?
I got inspired and wrote a little article with pictures on the camera that I used to own, find it here.

Nice little article, Johan. The N-L engraving remains a mystery, although Lager states that it means "Odin", the Dutch Leica importer.
The custom badge is interesting. I've never seen one of those. This rules out however the possibility that the camera is a German military camera.
The fact that this camera shows two red sides of the curtains means that the worker in the factory could decide himself how to insert the curtains into the camera. Odd when you know how disciplined the Leitz-factory was.

Erik,
I'm not sure until what date the Dutch customs used tags to identify expensive items that were taken abroad but if this was done until after the war, it might mean that the camera was taken abroad by a Dutchman and it was tagged before it left the Netherlands so that no taxes were required upon return.
Unless this tag was attached by Leitz themselves, in that case it could mean the camera was brand new!

I remember that even in the early sixties a note from the customs was required when taking a camera abroad.

Sartorius and Laney also state that N-L is for the Dutch importer Odin, S-T for Tiranty in Paris etc etc.

...and yes, when I was a youth I would take the receipt for the camera with me when travelling to prove that I had bought it in my home country.

Yes, but why were not all cameras engraved? The engravings are very rare.

Erik,
I don't know the answer. I thought it was only a pre-war practice.
This one has Tiranty engraved on the side of the baseplate. Maybe that was done by Tiranty not Leitz...which may further confuse the issue.
