Having just gotten a very nice example of the Elmar (coated, from 1951), I decided to resurrect this thread with a few shots from my first roll of HP5+, developed in Caffenol C-H(RS).

You guys and gals are always talking about which lens is better or sharper or better color rendition or whatever. The 50mm Elmar that I have used for over 50 years still is my favorite 35mm lens. Maybe it is like a girlfriend that never did you wrong.

You guys and gals are always talking about which lens is better or sharper or better color rendition or whatever. The 50mm Elmar that I have used for over 50 years still is my favorite 35mm lens. Maybe it is like a girlfriend that never did you wrong.

The Elmar formula was solid from the start, Leitz only ever changed the curvature of the front element and the type of glass used.

I've only been using my 1939 Elmar for a few months - I love it. I like it better than my newest version 50mm Elmar.
It's light, compact, and sharp - all I want in a lens.

Ha! The only downside to old lenses…..

No, the 3.5 doesn't bother me at all. I can use a fast film and/or shoot a low shutter speed to compensate.

I can shoot a steady 1/20th with the 111c, which is more than I can do with the chunkier M6 😛 .

I got mine earlier this year and I've been really impressed with it in both B&W and color.

Thanks for the kind words, Helen. I shot those within the first hours of getting my little Elmar - Bryant Park was my first destination.
