I recently bought an R3A and have been trying different lenses with it. I haven't used a straight 50mm for a while and I am really liking it. Many years ago, before my zoom period, the 50mm was all I used. Here are some shots with the Industar 61LD. It doesn't seem overly contrasty and it gives a very nice tonal range.

When I get the chance I am going to compare it with my 40mm M-Rokkor.

I bought it on Ebay, $28.00 shipped. Focusing was a bit rough when I got it but I cleaned it and it is nice and smooth. Not quite as nice as the M-Rokkor I have but close. I am really enjoying this lens.

Hi Chuck,

Do you have the regular CL 40/2 Rokkor or the CLE version?

I have an I61 (for sale, make offer) that takes great photos in LTM, but I'm not sure if it's L/D, is it supposed to say L/D on the lens anywhere? Thanks.

I have the CLE version of the M-Rokkor.

As far as the 61LD goes it is labeled on the lens. I can't read Russian but there are 2 letters after the 61, so I assume that is the LD. I bought it mainly because it has click stops for the aperture. I really like having click stops on my lenses. LOL😎 It is supposed to perform a bit better because of the special glass. But, I don't know if this is true or not.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by its perfomance. It has a nice sublety to it. It is supposed to be a contrasty lens but I have found it to be crisp but with nice tonality. Maybe I got a different copy. Either way I like it.

I have the CLE 40/2 as well. My I-61 doesn't have any extra letters so I guess it's the non-LD. Also, the "I" is a reversed "N", maybe it's a copy of the I-61!! It does have clicks from 2.8 to 16 with no settings in-between.

Last week I took photos with it on the same roll as an I-22, I-50, and Serenar 35/3.5, but didn't think about adding the 40/2 to the mix at the time. Maybe later this week.

I think the L/D is the only with click stops, right?

I like mine alot, although I find myself using my j-3 for the extra stops. The j-3 seems a little sharper as well, but the I-61 seems to have more 'vibe' - for lack of a better word.

I've ordered one from that seller too (and I think it tried to arrive today - the postman left a card after either not bothering to knock, or knocking too quietly for me to hear - grrr!). I've used him before and he seems like a good guy (the seller, not the postman) - I got an "as new" J-12 from him for something like £40 including postage.

There was quite a few manufacturers of Industar lenses. Originally the lenses were marked as Industar-61, then Lytkarino put letter L (who knows what they meant Lytkarino or Lantan glass), and later they added letter D (Dalnomer from russian translates as rangefinder) to distinguish from m42 SLR versions. KMZ also had Industar-61A in production for old Zenit SLRs, and there was Industar 61 L/Z (Zerkalo in russian means mirror) for Zenits SLRs (by Lytkarino). There is a big chance that Industar-61 without any letters was made in Kharkov by FED. They all are good if in good condition.

According to the database referenced, mine, s/n 69996xx is around the I-61's without the LD designation, and I guess was made between 1969 and 1988, has that same logo as others I-61's, other than the logo, 45 deg CW s/n, 45 deg cw "2,8/52" 45 deg cw backwards N-61, that's all there is, oh, and it's a panda. The 3 screws at the back have red paint in them. The apterture stops only at the big ones, no in-betweens.

It almost certain was made in 1969. This is one of the earliest I-61 without LD letters. I guess logo is FED, so it was made in Kharkov. FED in cyrillic is ФЭД and their logo is stylish letters FED in cyrillic (manuscript cyrillic Д looks very similar to latin D). Probably this lens left the factory in complect with some beautiful early FED. (I like FEDs up to FED-3).
P.S. I heard the rumour that some earliest I-61 were not made of lanthan glass, i.e. were not radioactive and so contrasty. I don't have a proof though.
