Strap connection to Leica IIIc lugs

I have both Nicca and Leica LTM cameras with near perfect lugs. I'd like to conserve them as best possible. After looking around I decided on Peak Design straps with the string anchors. However, the lug holes are too small to pass the double string (Arghhh) It seems I am stuck with steel or brass split rings and really would like to hear what others have used to minimize lug wear. A half case would not work as modern ones do not have incorporated straps and still use the lugs.

I have cameras I have used for 25 years that have no wear visible on the lugs. My screwmount Leicas don't have any wear on theirs either, and those are 6-70 year old cameras. I would not worry about it. The lugs were designed to be used with metal strap rings and are hardened to take it.

If Peak Design can do it with string, so can you. Learn knots or, if you want it to look cleaner, rope splicing.

My M2 lugs are well worn after going-on 60 years of use. Brian's solution seems to be the answer!

It’s not exactly a string. It’s a sophisticated engineered woven high strength and wear tested “string”

I con'tacted Peak Design. V4 anchor threads are thicker than V3. V4 ships with current purchases as there was a recall of the previous version, although failure rate was infinitesimally low. PD is going to send me some V3 anchors to try. I will notify everyone who is interested in how this goes.

Up to? so they may break anywhere under 200 lbs? 😀 Seriously though, they don't use spider silk or woven mithril. You can purchase material of the same strength.

Of course just using the PD system is a good solution.

I don't think so (but maybe)...it has several layers, some of which are woven.


There is an underlalyer from the outer layer that is orange/yellow and if you see it, certainly a warning sign of too much wear.

this is a good idea in theory. I will probably have to pinch the end of the loop of V3 anchors to get it started. Floss may not be good to pull through but floss is not that strong, at least the stuff I use.


I just don't fancy split rings. And absolutely no way would I use any rings on the rectangular lugs of my M5.

Get new lugs installed with the next CLA.

Kenji Leather (Singapore) does a case for LTM cameras without lugs that is excellent (I own one) and his website is far easier to understand than Luigi's. And he will do custom work so this is probably the safest solution... no lug wear at all.

What would work well would be some sort of Carbon Fiber quick detach system yet to be realized ;-) The Peak Design system seems out of step with the Leica design language, just saying. Looking cool is the most important thing!

OK....Peak Design was kind enough to send me a set of V3 anchors which have a more slender thread compared to V4. It is a simple matter to attach these anchors to any lugs on a Leica or a copy. I have done it with both. If concerned about lugs, then this is a really great solution as I can switch cameras easily with the Slide Lite. (new version will also accept V3 anchors) It's a snap...!!!! Is it the best look for a Leica? I will leave that to the RFF pundits.

Perhaps not for everyone. But very functional. V3 anchors are black with a red edge. Black sharpie would do the trick.
