I'm about to buy one of these and want to know the best way to prevent it from retracting/ collapsing so I don't hit my Model P's curtain.

Thanks,
Bill

I just sold one, and have to say that if you simply are not planning to retract it at all, then you shouldn't need a "fix"; it'll stay put well enough on it's own. They must be turned just so before they collapse, and it's not something you'd do by accident unless there is something wrong with the lens.

If you are planning to collapse it partially, then yes, you'll want some insurance.

If you wrap the front end of the barrel with Dymo tape, the tape will prevent the lens from collapsing into a metering cell or curtain. I've had my collapsible lenses taped for years. It's a good fix.

That is what leitz recommended for the M5 and CL way back.

The Summar doesn't hit the shutter on the P, 7, and 7s. Well, it sure doesn't threaten the shutter on my 7s. It doesn't go in nearly as far as an Elmar, anyways.

Like an Elmar, it can scrape along the light baffle at the top of the crate. This happens if one of the three locking lugs on the tube is pointing up. If you turn it just enough to unlock the lugs, and then push it in, it won't scrape, as there will be lugs at 10, 2, and 6 O'clock.

This lug scraping problem is only a problem with the 50mm Elmar and Summar lenses. It also happens with the 50/3.5 Serenar, being an Elmar clone. The Summitar and Summicron lenses have the groove and ball-bearing arrangement, which ensures that the three lugs are always at 10, 2, and 6 when collapsing.
