With the holiday season approaching, I wonder what photographic gifts we would give ourselves? More talent and better subjects, I would expect. But I don’t know if even Santa can come up with those; so, in the holiday spirit of self-giving I’m just going for gear. Of course, there is the traditional search for the perfect gadget bag, but, sadly, what we keep putting in the bag changes demanding a change in what we consider perfect. Where the industry has failed, perhaps Santa can succeed in fulfilling our fantasies. I think what I would like is a monochrome/black & white digital camera that is less expensive than the Leica Monochrome, a set of Leica lenses and a back up body. I have been impressed with large prints from the Leica. I know several other manufacturers considered b&w versions of their cameras but felt that the marketplace for such cameras just wasn’t worth there. In general, mono sensors produce an image quality that you would expect from a sensor with twice as many pixels. Perhaps today’s mega megapixel color sensors are more than sufficient even when converted to black-and-white. But, there are rumors there is more to image quality than pixel count. I sure wish Santa would leave something in my stocking that would let me find out.
Since Santa can do things that manufacturers can’t, I would love to hear what you would like him to put in your stocking.

Okay Bill, since we're dreaming here, I would love for Santa to bring me a rangefinder camera the size and weight of a Barnack IIIF w/50mm collapsible cron, but with a viewfinder that I could focus as easily as I do my M3, and a lens that renders as beautifully as my current generation 50mm cron (non APO).
That's all.
Happy Holidays everyone.
Best,
-Tim

"Gifts... ...more talent and better subjects." Bill, you are becoming a consumerist!

Just like to get my M-E back from Leica NJ repair center before Xmas but I'm told its not going to happen. In the meantime I do have an m240 loaner and grateful for that but its just not the same as its not mine. Maybe before Xmas they'll offer me the M242 in exchange?

Why don't you give each other a Monochrome for Christmas, then it won't cost you anything.
