Geez,
And here I am agonizing over selling two or three FEDs and maybe a Kiev, and some other assorted small stuff...
I've done something similar with other hobbies and, for me anyway, less "stuff" felt pretty good. So, Jorge, if you can find somebody with the $ to buy your stuff go for it! I figure, though, that it doesn't have to be either or.

You're going to have to tear it apart if you want to sell. In fact, I beleive you'll receive more if you do this in sections. First you get someone to buy a body and then hike up the lens prices. :>) Now, back to being serious, selling in parts generates more money for you especially if it is auctioned away.

I am a full time working shooter and I don't own that much Leica, that is insane!

Gosh man, pair it down and be a photographer, commit to learning a great piece of gear and show the world you are not just another collector.

I own 10 camera bodies and 22 lenses, I use all of them. But in Leica, all I need is a M6, 28 cron and 50 lux asheric, what more could you possibly need while on assignment?

A lot of times, I take a really light kit, just go out an experience life and only take the camera out when life presents it's self in grand fashion. The photos turn out better and I am in turn, a better photographer and better human being.

No matter what camera you use, none of them will make the magic happen, none at all. Only a photographer who is one to make things happen will fully exploit what any camera will do.

You don't need all that gear, you don't need to replace it with as much either.
What you might need to do is get off of the computer, shoot film for a month without getting any of it processed and enjoy life.

...this place is unreal sometimes....
 
in all honesty I shoot mainly with 3 lenses.. 24, 35 and 50. I may switch to the 28 now instead of the 24 since the M8 has a crop factor. I bought all these lenses because Chrome ones are hard to find and they will be in demand one day.
 
Unless you need the money why not sell a lens or two and get a D200 kit. You can assemble a nice one for around $5K. Then you'll have the best of both worlds. Really, I think there is an interesting psychodynamic here which you should look into. But perhaps without all of us looking on.

Jorge my man... settle down for a bit. You should really try out dslrs if you want to, but you shouldn't dive into it like crazy. I mean, if you want to see if you like porsches, you first get a second one, you don't start with the latest and greatest. Why? because you might not even like its shifting, its sound, etc. after a year of driving it. Meanwhile, you now really know what a porsche feels like without spending too much guito.

I'm all for trying out new stuff, but in a wisely and BRIGHT way, not in a hasty one. You are still thinking that it is the gear that will make you a better photographer or actually enjoy it more or less. It's ok to never stay put and keep trying different formats, technologies, etc. But you should also realize that you might not be enjoying the leica or rffs that much because you lack in knowledge or sheer technical and artistic abilities that you should first try to acquire or improve. I'm not being harsh, just very sincere. It's easy to simply quit and change, it's harder to improve ourselves.

Just the fact alone that you're not even sure why you should go dslr is a clear sign that you shouldn't really do this. Get a crappy dslr. Good photography will still be good with a 5mp crappy dslr. Bad photography will never be good with a 100mp one. It's that simple but some people just don't want to see it.

There's magnificent photography made that is by today's standards less than acceptable in terms of lens resolution, etc. But those photos are still the ones that will teach and speak to the heart of the next generations.

Photography is made by photographers, not by gear. Keep that in mind. HCB would have made great photography with a canonet or a dslr, don't fool yourself.

Stay cool and whatever you decide, just enjoy the ride.

I have lost my mind and am now seriously thinking of going DSLR 100%. I have a lot invested in the Leica gear and would rather put the money to better use. Regardless If I sell, it will be the complete kit. I do not want to break it up. Breaking it up will leave me with regretful feelings while I still see bits laying around. If I sell it as an entire kit it is all gone at once. So here you go.

Too much money to burn, some shooting, spending time and $ on gear instead of actually forcing yourself to be creative. Pretty much sums it up 🙂

Some would rather spend 10k on a big trip with a couple of cheap rff than to get a 5d and shoot the same old stuff. It's all about priorities.. some people suffer more from GAS, it's all good..

Just like in audio world. Some spend 1k-2k on an audio system and 10k on music. Some spend 10k on an audio system and 1k on music. It's all good 🙂

(Boy this thread is making my head hurt!)

Jorge: I've been down this particular road way too many times, and largely got off the GAS merry-go-round a decade and a half ago, sticking with one (very nice) AF SLR setup for about ten years before making a complete switch to RFs five years back, my mantra being less, smaller, better. There is an old cheap (free, actually...a cast-off from a client of mine) digicam for the quick n' dirty snaps digital does best, but largely I'm thrilled with what I have and can't really imagine ditching it for Something Else, barring non-repairable failure of one or both bodies. It took a little while to get here, but "here I is".

(Also, what do you mean by "no support" for the DMR?)

Somehow, chucking the whole RF setup for yet another dSLR foray seems rather drastic...and, since you've already "been there", what might you have really missed since last time?

At the very least, I'm in the camp that says: keep the MP and at least two key lenses, then – if you insist – sell off the rest and go where you wanna go, do what you wanna do. And if you insist on doing the Big dSLR thing, try something different and really big...a Mamiya Z22, mayhaps? 🙂

Hey Jorge, when you get your D200 and a few lenses (the 70-200 VR is fabulous) then head on over to Nikonians and tell them you dumped Leica for a Nikon system...you'll be greeted like the prodigal son and the fatted calf will look distinctly nervous... 🙂

I think you'd miss the character of your rf - none of Nikon slrs have had anything special about them since the F4 (and the F3 and perhaps FE2 had more) IMO. But it's a good workhorse system. And the opportunities to buy bits are almost endless - funky things like reversing rings, bellows units, all the flash units you can eat etc - only then it'll be called 'NAS'.

But I am a bit puzzled as to why you want a total switch...no reason not to have D200 system and a bunch of rf gear. Many of us do. It's all photography at the end of the day.

I'd say try the Nikon before you sell all the Leica gear. Sell the MP and the 21 since you are not using them much anyways (the 21 to me for a good price) to help you finance a used D2X (don't bother with the D200 as you will trade up at some point) and a couple decent Zeiss lenses. Try it out for a couple months and then either sell your redundant Leica lenses, Nikon, or keep it all so that you can have some peace of mind.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Jorge are you going to attach an external rangefinder to your DSLR accessory shoe? For old times sake? 😀
 
Well, Jorge, it took some finding, but on LUF somebody shot M8 and D2X side by side. Given this result, I know which system I would sell. And it would not be the M8.....

And there is another, more controlled comparison HERE, where Nikon manages to come a lot closer, but that one does not give any incentive to switch systems either.

If any decision can be based on Internet opinions, and that is a very large if, I would say it boils down to personal preferences and shooting style - apart from financial considerations of course. Good luck!
