Canon LTM unbelievable- $710 Canon 50/1.5

Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Hmmm... Lets see: Canon 50/1.2 - oops, sold to Roland years ago - my bad; Canon 50/1.5 - check, and the price I paid is looking pretty good today; Nikkor 50/1.5 "Tokyo" LTM - check, and ditto; CJZ Sonnar in LTM - check x 2 (one "transition" and one built up from a J-3 mount and a Contax lens - thanks to Brian for both!). OK.

Roland - how do you translate schadenfreude?

Make your own Carl Zeiss Jena 5cm F1.5 in LTM:

It's just not that hard, and cost ~1/3rd the price of buying an original! Or in this case- a Canon 50/1.5.

1938 CZJ 5cm F1.5, uncoated, now in LTM- and cured an RFF'r from Canon 50/1.5 envy.

Still almost 2 hours to go. Pretty much a three-way bidding war

Hi, guys!
I am the winner... and obviously the happy new owner of the most expensive Canon 50/1.5 in the world... That position itself is worth 710$ for sure, trust me! It is a gorgeous feeling, and I hope the new lens will be OK too.
Nice discussion here, but RFF is not guilty for the high price, nor is Peter's new book. Please blame Dante Stella. And forget Kevin's lens for 600 bucks - there is none on his site. Or would you consider Amedeo's tailored Nikor 55/1.2 in M mount for 1700$ at http://stores.shop.ebay.com/bestcameraseller?

Wish you more luck in bidding next time!

Congratulations on the new lens, you will like it.

Canon 50/1.5 on the Bessa R2.

It is a faithful rendition of the Zeiss Sonnar.

Glad we are off the hook, and it is all DANTE's fault...

Just a hint- RFF prices are usually better than Ebay prices. So check out the member ads.

And on the CANON: check the surface behind the aperture blades carefully. Keep an eye on it. If the original lubricants are still in the lens, you need to clean it every few years. With the price you paid on the lens, consider having it cleaned and those lubricants replaced. I've seen more than one ruined that stuff.

(and I had all the luck in the world with my winning bid on this Canon)

Here is another faithful rendition of the Zeiss Sonnar. :)

CZO 50/1.5 (with nicely brassed front ring) and Amedeo M adapter.

Let's see, the camera + adapters + lens was almost the same price as the Canon. :)

Here's a shot using the Sonnar:

nice lens and an even nicer looking cat !

If I had an Amedeo adapter, I could use my Opton 50/1.5 on an M body. Now I use it on a Contax IIa or IIIa. Not bad either.

I use one of my CZO 50/1.5's on the Canon 7 with an Amadeo LTM adapter, and the second one on a Nikon S2, with the Helical shimmed for Zeiss and the RF calibrated for the Sonnar.

I am determined to make an LTM CZO 50/1.5 Sonnar. I have one more lens coming in for the attempt before breaking out the dremel...Mad Laughter follows.

Now- the Canon 50/1.5 with the J-3 rear-module. Same mad laughter.

Today at Camera Exchange in San Antonio they had Canon 50 f1.5 for $169.99 and the 50 f1.8 for $99.99; each in good user condition. I got the f1.8 but after reading this thread started having second thoughts. So I looked at lots of examples shot with each on Flickr and have decided against trying to exchange it - for my needs the f1.8 looks like it does a fine job and the price is right. If anybody else is interested in the f1.5 the shop has a website.

Thanks for the advice, Brian!
Next time I'll be awake, and when/if I decide to sell that Canon 50/1.5 lens on RFF, I will not ask for more than what I bought it for!

... The Canon 50/1.5 and the Nikkor 50/2 are my latest acquisitions of LTM lenses. ...

Raid, you re-purchased the Nikkor 50/2 ??? I'm still enjoying the one I bought from you, though having the Nikkor 50/2, Nikkor 50/1.4 and Canon 50/1.5 is a bit redundant for me. I should let someone else have one of the Nikkors, but I really have trouble parting with a good vintage lens -- I'm sure I'd end up buying a replacement down the road.. :)
Best,
Ari

I understand that! And it's the reason my Canon 50/1.5 is staying put. And the Nikkors in LTM. I've sold some of my Zeiss conversions but have always made myself a replacement.

The various "Sonnar formula" lenses all have their individual personalities. Less redundant than one might thing, unless you only go by focal length and speed.

The "unbelievable $710 Canon 50/1.5" lens has arrived in only 2 days from Japan to Croatia and it is up to my best expectations. Mint and clean, shiny and smooth, there is no superfluous lubricant on the blades, it is in much better condition than described...
Sorry, this one is not for sale on RFF! :)
