What have you just BOUGHT?

Just walked out of a charity shop with this in my hands. I paid £10 as they were told it was not working properly.

Had the mirror up and the self timer engaged. When I pushed the On/Off switch to the On position, the self timer completed the action. The X and B speeds work properly.

I have 10 days to return it if it is not working ok. I need to put batteries when I am back at home to test the rest of the speeds. Viewfinder looks very nice 👍
Do you remember this post? I went for my usual lunch break walk at the local charity shops and the lady who runs the one I got the Minolta XE-7 from, came to speak to me. She found the lens the camera came with and asked whether I wanted to have a look. Hoping that it would be the 58f/1.2 I got a bit disappointed seeing the Rokkor-X MD 50/1.7 (1977, American version). They were asking £20 for it and I wasn't terribly convinced I needed it but then I thought it would be unfair to separate them after working together for almost 50 years now. So I caved in and paid to have it.

So my camera is from around 1975 and the lens from the first version of MD Rokkor from 1977. Looks like the camera remained unsold for a few years and was then sold with the MD Rokkor-X, both for the American market.

That's a nice lens cap too...

I've been trying a cheap 35mm rig for scanning but it has a few problems. Mainly that the negative carrier is quite loose which leads to inconsistent shots between frames and wonky scans. About a year ago I bought a Negative Supply copy stand and a Valoi 360 scanning kit. I had just put it in storage but I have now brought it out and assembled it.

That brings back a lot of memories. Back in the 70s I worked for a while for a real estate magazine publishing company. My main job was using a copy stand to copy photos that realtors gave us. However, my copy stand was not near as nice as this. If my memory is correct, I shot a Nikon F2 on the stand, mounted with a Nikkor 50mm macro lens.

I've never been a gambler but I couldn't pass up a recent offer from MPB. It was a 50mm ƒ2.8 Elmar in M-mount being sold as a "spares and repairs". The lens looked pristine but the description said it would not align with a rangefinder's focusing mechanism. Otherwise no problem was indicated. Knowing full well there could also be other problems due to impact damage, I ordered it. I do not use rangefinders these days. I'm using a lot of M-mount and LTM lenses on Nikon Z bodies. A lack of focus with a rangefinder wouldn't preclude using it.

(I'm just trying to justify the purchase, I guess. If it turns out to be useless It can look good on the shelf.🙄)

I've been trying it out this afternoon with some 35mm negs. It is much better than the cheap rig and much faster to scan. Coupled with the new Capture One negative workflow it is very nice.

My first attempts at scanning were with a similar setup that I came up with on my own. One problem I found I had was all the extraneous light coming into the lens from the surrounding area. I ended up using a piece of black pvc sewer pipe I had left over from another project that would allow the lens to see mainly the light coming thru the negative or slide only. I found it greatly improved the quality of the scans I was getting. It also eventually led me to finding a bellows unit which I adapted my cameras to. This also insured that the sensor was parallel to the slide/negative as well.

I've found that it is OK if the room is dimmed. I use a torch to help me see to feed the film in to the carrier. Negative Supply sell something that sounds like what you were using:

That lens I mentioned above that I bought. The Elmar 50/2.8 M-mount. Yeah, that one. Came today. Put it on an adapter, tried it on a Z5. Works great. Focuses accurately at infinity and up close when used on the Nikon with an adapter. It's sharp. The only downside is that it will not collapse. I can live with that. Especially considering the low price.

New addition to the fold and a bit of a dream camera for me. My local camera repair fellow recently got this in - Pentax 6x7 MLU with a 45/4 lens, plain prism as well as a currently non-working TTL prism (that’s being looked at). He offered it to me for a very good price so I knew that if I didn’t go for it I’d probably never end up buying one. It’s in excellent shape and I already have a roll of expired Delta 400 loaded (the LowePro camera bag that came with the camera had three expired rolls of film in the front pocket so a nice little bonus). Now do I wish it had the 105mm lens instead? Of course, but I think I can make do with the 45mm for the time being.

One thing that the camera did not come with was a strap. I looked at the strap lugs and thought that they were close to the Hasselblad lugs. I tried one of the straps I had sitting around and determined that I needed to open up the channels in the strap clips just a bit. After some minor filing on the sides they fit perfectly.

Hoping this opens up a new chapter of image-making!

Awesome! Mine arrives Tuesday, can't wait! Mine comes with the Takumar 135mm f/4 "macro", that appears to be a fantastic portrait lens.
