What camera and/or lenses to bring always seems to come up for discussion one way or another. I thought it would be nice to consolidate some of these thoughts in a single thread..
As I get older, my days of carrying around a big d/slr or medium format or larger camera are long gone. So my ideas of the perfect setup are most likely different then yours. In general, I don't tend to shoot w/ prime lenses (3 or more). I don't want to make friends and family wait on me..no only am I spoiling their vacation, but vacation is the time to enjoy time w/ your friends and family not glue to the back of a camera. Don't get me wrong, when I was younger, I definitely been there and done that.
My options for for vacation....
- Panasonic LX100 plus Ricoh GR
- Fuji XT1 w/ 18-135 WR and eventually the 35f2 WR plus Rioch GR
A vacation that involves water sports like snorkeling, the GR could be replaced w/ a Sony p&s that is waterproof to 10m. The Fuji setup if I end up on a vacation that may have rain in the forecast or I know I need the zoom range of 27-200 fov.
If I go on vacation to someplace like Yosemite I would bring the Fuji xt1 and most likely Sigma DP0 for panoramic shot.
I have taken the Panasonic lx100 plus the Rioch GR the last two vacations. To me it is a near perfect setup.. I can put everything I want to carry everyday in a small sling bag including my kindle page white or I can out the GR in my front jean pants pocket, the kindle in my back and the lx100 hangs around my shoulder..
For me, the lx100 w/ the 24-75fov f1.7-2.8 zoom ends up the primary camera. Though I rarely shoot video at home...on vacation I will shoot it when I think it would be better, especially getting 8mp pics from 4K video.
For most cases, the 24-75 zoom range meets probably 80-90% of my needs. While digital zoom is really nothing more than cropping, the iResolution which try's to fill in the missing pixels and two different ways of digital zoom..which when combined gives u a 4x zoom factor. Granted it is nowhere as good as a good zoom like the 55-200 Fuji, but it does an adequate job. Good enough for the vacation snap shots. From the 24-75, I have been able to print up to 13x19 and have been very happy w/ the results.
Not only is the GR the perfect backup camera for vacation but one could also argue that in its own right, it could be a good vacation camera. Having 28 native fov, 35 and 47 crop fov plus the optional 21 fov attachment makes it a great city vacation camera just by itself.
Both these cameras are close enough to normal p&s, that I can hand them to a stranger and ask them to take a picture of my wife and I. The lx100 has a dumb mode (iA button) that disables a lot of function and puts it in a real do everything p&s mode.
As u can c the lx100 plus GR for me makes the near perfect vacation setup..followed by the xt1. I plan to bring the lx100 plus GR on my trip to Japan next year.
So how about u?
