Where does it all end or how much is too much?

After seeing the other posting about "Another Yashica" I began wondering. What if conditions change (in the film camera world) to the point where you can start picking up old 35 RF cameras for $5. and $10. and, well, where would you stop when it comes to buying them?

I mean, personally, I would buy as many as I could get at those prices. I would probably start worrying about my sanity at, hmm, about 40 or 50 cameras.

But, how about you guys?

The madness NEVER ends! Although I *am* in the process of selling a large part of my so-called collection...hehehehe. Who likes Bronica?

being a poor social worker actually helps me to keep things in check, otherwise it would be crazy with cameras everywhere.

My reality is that I only have so much time to get out and take pictures and some mental quirk of mine produces stress if I have too many cameras to choose from.

I'm happiest with a digital SLR, a P&S digital, two rangefinders and two manual SLRs. I currently have more than that and will no doubt thin the herd by selling off a few extras.

However, if I could pick up classics at $5-10 a pop, I think my need for simplicity would be seriously comprimised by my love of a bargain. End result - my head would explode.

Ah, I've got two complete Bronica C's - the S2A without the removable back (no darkslide to lose). Mint, with lots of lenses, many weird and rare accessories, etc. Need some cashola. Let me know if your friend is interested.

Me likey the Bronicas, but me need to repair the Fujica G690 and start using it again.

Let's assume for the sake of the argument that film was discontinued tomorrow. No more film - not even in your freezer.

Would you still buy cameras simply because their 'beauty' or 'display value'?

Nope. I love vintage cameras, and I love the way they look (well, some of 'em), but if they can't be used, they're just taking up space.

I film were discontinued tomorrow, I would be at work on adapting a digital sensor to the Nikon RF series. There would not be much else that I would spend money on. The Flash sync would be used to trigger the camera. The expensive part would be getting an S36 for the sensor and electronics. I have an F36 for my Nikon F, so it would be the first in line. This would not be much different from what Kodak did for the Nikon SLR's like the N8008s and N90. An old Kodak DCS460 would be a good donor for the electronics and sensor.

BTW, this was my answer 12 years ago when my boss said "your chosen profession is going to make your favorite hobby obsolete". I spent most of the '80s doing data acquisition systems for custom made Digital Sensors.

As a proud cheapskate/E**y bottom feeder, I can honestly say I buy all my cameras for little or nothing since I usually get them from yard/estate sales, pawn shops, thrift shops, friends/relatives and yes, occasionally (too darn often) from the site which must not be named. Three of my latest include a Mamiya slr w/50mm for $20 Cn., a Pentax K1000 w/50 for $20 Cn., and a Kodak Signet 35 for $7.50 U.S.. I don't buy anything unless it's at a really reasonable price since I figure I can always buy another at a later time. P.S. If film were discontinued I'd have a lot more paperweights than I have now.

Don't think paperweights - you've got think OUTSIDE the box.

Think 'catapult'.

Imagine it. A huge freakin' catapult in your backyard, hidden from the neighbors.

With pinpoint accuracy, you proceed to rain antique rangefinder hell on some imagined enemy blocks away. They talk about it on the news that night - "Neighbors say it's raining cameras on Jones street!"

You could be a legend.

For as long as your collection lasted.

Then you could switch to kitty litter. Used kitty litter.

oh, i was hoping to interest you in a trade for a canonet 17 or konica s3.
i know how short you are on cameras at the moment and thought in your need i might somehow be of assistance.

and also, i really want some canon glass for my soon to arrive canon p and thought the 50/1.8 was my best option.
