wondering...zoom better for travel?

Why bother with a zoom if yøu don't like it anyway?

I've never had dust issues before, and I usually travelled with 3 lenses, and my camera did not have this anti-dust cleaning thing.

There's a LOT to be said for the simplicity of one body and one 28-85 (18-55) zoom when traveling for fun.

Yeah, if you can do 700 pictures with a batch job, could work. I still think the zoom is the way to go. Like you say, "...no bag..."

Why would you want to correct 700 photos? If you went with a clean sensor on vacation then the dust from changing lenses during one week should be minor. Most likely you will only see this on images of sky blue or white background. Then I'd only work on those 20-30 images I put online or print.

I usually travel with both a zoom and a prime. My current set up is an M9 + 35 Cron plus a Fuji X20. Previously it was the M9 + 35 and an OM-D + 12-35/2.8 (found it too heavy and decided on the X20 as the zoom companion instead).

On the "serious" shooting days I'd take both, but on the "stroll" days, the zoom does fine (and saves the shoulder a bit).

Joe, if its image quality you're concerned about, the zoom is great. I just used it for a family weekend away and the images are as good as anything else I've made. But don't forget that you are constrained aperture-wise with the zoom. Daytime... no problem. But indoor or in the evening, be prepared to brace yourself against something or carry a tripod. With that in mind, if I were you, I'd take the zoom plus the fast 35/1.4. If you're going to be in Manhattan, the scene changes quickly and having the zoom would be a blessing.

i think at this point the decision is between the 14 and the 18 to go along with the 35...one or 2 bodies might be left to my last minute mood...

For city shots w/ 14 think old quarter of European city where a 35 is the normal or for getting a great shot of that church and u don't have room to step back.

The 18 is going to be a better general use lens.

The reason I like to use 21/40 combo is that I have used for sooo long that I can picture the 24 and 28 crops w/ it in my mind. I was never in the camp of use 100% of the frame w/ that lens. It was picture the shot if lens is not right do the work in the darkroom during printing.

The 28 fov is the widget u can use w/ people w/o issues such as group pictures.

Zoom? Short, long? Both! They aren't that fast...so where's flash? Not this, but with swivel and rotating head. Umh, it's large...but that's it. I'll drop in also AA charger for flash.

Instead I take small camera with single lens and enjoy my trip.
28mm or 40mm are my choices. It can be compact with wide zoom but fixed to body - no changing, no fumbling.

Not a Fuji, but the concept is the same - the only reason I kept the NEX-7's kit zoom was for family travel. If I'm on vacation (as opposed to a shooting holiday) I want to keep it simple and versatile.

With the 18mm lens, you gain one stop of light. With the 35mm, you gain (I believe) 2 1/3s stops of light. Both are small(ish) lenses.

With the zoom, you gain every other focal length, plus OIS that I have found useful up to 3 stops.

Unless you are really opposed to the size or want to isolate something (not sure what, especially on the street), I am not sure why it wouldn't make sense to have the zoom. It wants for nothing optically, and these are the situations that (to me) warrant owning one.

Bring the zoom and the 35mm 1.4. It can get really dark in NYC bars. 😉 All of your lenses will be useful honestly. We have some very tight streets. I isolate things all of the time on the street... if you are coming to photograph, bring it all.

what interestes me about the zoom is...

with the zoom on the body i really wont need to carry a bag when out shooting...extra cards/batteries would easily fit in my jeans pocket.
2 lenses would necessitate a bag...i don't like lenses in jean pockets.
