Works pretty well with close-up lenses, too. Combined with the 0.45m MFD, you can get to macro distances without the light loss of extension tubes.
The first shot is at or near the lens' native MFD, and the rest are with Hoya Close-up lenses.

Well-known
I agree. A dreary, low-contrast lens. Probably ideally matched with 800-speed color neg film.I don't know if the formula is exactly the same or not, but I did own a 50/1.8 long-nose and found it to be one of the worst, most boring lenses I've ever used on B/W film. It seemed to render stark, flat, 2 dimensional images that lacked pleasing mid-tone gradation.
If the results are stark/flat, that's because they were processed stark/flat. It's quite capable of contrasty images.

Are you seeing that in my results, or just your own? Do you have some examples of your own to share? I'm just curious about the basis of your opposing viewpoint.
Also, is there a different Nikkor 50mm lens that you prefer? Preferably one that is lightweight, compact, and costs less than $150.

I love this pancake lens. Really sharp, well built, colours just perfect. Sometimes I find it too contrasty, though.

I don't mind flare either, but a lot of people consider it to be a "defect". I prefer to consider it a "feature".

To be fair pluton might be talking about the long nose version. The JDM (Japanese domestic model) version, which is a pancake with 0.45m MFD, is one of the sharpest 50mm I have used.
Welcome to the forum, gaheris, thanks for sharing your photos in this thread! Glad to see another happy user of this lens.
Only pluton can verify which lens they are referring to, but I think both the long nose version and the JDM pancake share the same optical formula. Or at least the diagrams and technical specs look identical, as documented by MIR:

From those diagrams the 50/1.8 Nikkors all look the same, but they aren't - the glass types and coatings are different, and the curvatures must have been modified for at least some of them because the distance between the front element and the back element is not the same for all of them.
I love the trichromes dourbalistar.
