Have You seen the new 35/1.4 Nokton?

I'll probably give in and buy this lens (after the Zeiss Planar 50). Will be interesting to see how it compares with my 35 cron pre-asph.
 
Wow... It looks like my 40/1.4 will have to go (probably along with sevreal hundreds from other folks... :)). I never used it properly on the M8 (framelines) and my Rd1s gets less and less airtime.

And probably the 35/2.5 also. And my 35/1.2 Nokton must be feeling a bit afraid at the moment... :)
 
I want to know if the lens has CV's traditional cutout on the back that prevents the lens from being coded for M8, or if they made it more like the zeiss version that can be coded?

CV have revamped their LTM adapters to get rid of the cutout for this reason. So I would expect Mr K has done the same for the lens.

I, and I imagine many others are waiting to pickup a CV 40/1.4 for a good price as folks move to the 35mm.

Please note if you have the late model (head stays on), and if you modified for 35mm framelines when you place in the classifieds.

The lens diagram looks like a Summicron vs.1 of the 1950's. Obviously new glass sorts allow Cosina to push for one stop extra. I guess the characteristics will be very similar to the older Summilux 35/1.4, which is not even close to the modern (big) ASPH. 35/1.4 or the (modern, big) Nokton 35/1.2. Probably there will be heavy light-falloff to the edges, because this is common with high-speed Gaussian wideangles, except they have a large front element like the Canon 35/1.5 which has 48mm filter (and 8 elements as well).

I think the characteristics will be very special at f/1.4, probably with better boke than the 40/1.4. But I would be very surprised if it will be sharp beyond the center in f/1.4. And probably many buyer will not need it with a cropped sensor on a Leica M8.
But you won't get the performance of the ASPH. 35/1.4 at a small fraction of the price. Although probably slightly better perfomance than with a 30 years old Summilux pre-ASPH which is still quite expensive. 8 elements allow more correction than 7 of the 40/1.4 Nokton or the old Summilux 35/1.4. So there is some hope. But a multitude of elements, in this case including two minuscule small ones, need excellent mountings with tight ranges of error, or you will not get the results. As we all know, output quality of Cosina was sometimes erratic, quality control not at the same state as Leica or Zeiss in the past. Maybe they have improved in the factory process of ZM-lenses.

So I guess there is no war now between Leica and Cosina. But it will get a bit harder for Leica. No real news.

It will be more annoying for Zeiss. Of course, a 35 which is smaller and one step faster will lower the selling of the ZM-Biogon 35/2. But I suggest the Gaussian design limitations will not allow to beat the Biogon in terms of performance. And probably, this means there will be no Zeiss RF 35/1.4 lens in the next couple of years...

My last 35 was the UC-Hexanon 35/2, also very small, classic design, and (important for me) screwmount! For extra speed, I still have the Canon 35/1.5, a very fine lens which can be used quite universally.
I wasn't particular happy with the Ultron 35/1.7 in terms of color reproduction and ghost pictures in most backlite situations, quite bad for such a new lens. Sold it. I wish the newer 35/1.4 will be better here, than I give it a chance

Frank, thanks for the reply. I was starting to come to the same general conclusions, based on extrapolating information from Sean Reid's site. Regarding the 1.7 ultron, it sounds like it's a great indoor lens, but not outside. I'm tending toward a late pre-asph 'cron. I want something good, but compact. I like to see the framelines.

I sold my pre asph summilux - wide open, it had too much halo, and I was always shooting it wide open.

Cosina has discontinued the LH-5 lens hood for the 40/1.4, replacing it with the dual purpose LH-6 for both the 35/1.4 and 40/1.4.

It would seem the LH-6 has a wider acceptance angle, which in turn will actually make it less than the best choice for the 40/1.4.


Likewise, the smaller acceptance angle LH-5 may do a better job on the 35/1.4 than the LH-6 for the smaller than full frame M8 and RD1.

Both vented metal hoods bayonet onto the 35/1.4 or 40/1.4. In my opinion the special bayonet mount hoods make less costly generic hoods rather unattractive.

It seems that VOIGTLÄNDER.DE slowly got the message that too high prices in Germany will just increase Stephen's sales, and lower their own to quite zero.

It costs less than the Biogon, is one step faster, and shorter as well!

my problem is, I just have one M-mount camera (Bessa R3M) with no 35mm frameline!

It sounds like you need a Bessa R4M also, to open the door for more lens acquisitions! :)

Hi Doug, in fact, I'm not amused that I already lost the rewind crank of my Bessa R3M. I already have 3 Bessa's not including my pre-war Bessa Rangefinder (6x9)!
