Well, if you forget about the finder issue, One of my first comparisons was to the CLE. Slightly smaller, automation if you want it. But it has metered manual!
So maybe as close as it gets...

Small carry around, compatible with excellent lenses, AE, focuses crisply (relative to MF cameras), ideal for quick easy quality shooting...... no, it is totally different, modern, but very satisfying in the same way. I just think that though the tool can be used very well for the same function, it is not the same. That isn't a bad thing.

Ya, I hear you. Also just bought a house because prices were good, interest rates are low. Now my fun money each month goes down the rabbit hole of house upkeep and repairs. Dang!

I think when we get an RF-style body with a finder, that'll be your CLE.
Though my first thought when I took it out of the box was "digital Contax G1."

after using the gf1 for a brief period, with the 20/1.7 attached, i would say that atm, this is close to a digital cle.
similar size, same focal length lens (40 equivalent), even with the evf not too big.
if it had an optical finder it would be much better.
i have no need for metered manual or even manual focus.
i think i could be very happy with just this simple set up.
of course, i have no idea what i would do with all those camera bags 😉

I use my E-P1 with cv lenses and matching viewfinders. For me, it is a digital Bessa L or Zeiss SW with a built-in ground glass.
BTW, camera bags are great for storing equipment you no longer use on shelves. Keeps the dust off them.

I think I'd rather have the G1, in order to get a viewfinder, and a better handgrip. The Gf1 is not so small anyhow, once you mount the 14-45 zoom. I haven't bought either, having just ordered a D300. I've had a good experience with the D200, so decided to upgrade. I'll hold off on micro-4/3 until they come out with a wider prime lens. I'd like a 12mm f/2 or so.

i have a g1 also for a mate to the 14-140, great combo.
the gf1 feels much smaller than the g1 and with the 20 attached is a perfect combo.
apparently, panasonic is coming out with a fast(ish) 14 (28/2.8) which would make a nice kit with the 20.

The last prototype showed of this lens, it was a third of a stop faster, f/2.5.
A 'source'[1] reports it landing before the end of the year.

There was also a prototype 8mm f/3.5 'fisheye' prototype shown[1].
The current EVF on the GF1 is as disappointing as the viewfinder on the CL. So there's a correlation of sorts.

there will never be another cle, not exactly anyway.
but, for now, the similarities are enough.
but the day there is a more direct cle digital remake is the day i sell it all and settle down with one kit.

I think about the GF-1, and it seems interesting.
Then, when I simply need to shoot digital (not that often), I reach for the Olympus C-8080, and am amazed again at how Olympus simply nailed it with that one. Certainly lacking in the burst-rate department, but does the biz in every other way for me. My little Casio EX-850 handles all my other digi-needs handily (and, by some strange coincidence, they both come in at about 8MP).
I will say that Canon's G90 seems interesting, after playing with a client's example. (So much for my infatuation with Nikon's P6000.) But what I'm really itching to go to Adorama for right now is more film. It's feeding time for the Hexars and Contax Tvs. 😉
