Yes, you can find black original early screw mounts, to around the III Model F's age.
But not likely M's.
But not likely M's.
I've never really understood the widespread desire for brassy, black painted cameras, particularly Leicas.
Why pay such a large premium for a camera with such a delicate, easily damaged finish ?
There again, I've never understood the obsession with the myriad intricacies and innumerable variations of ''bokeh'', either.
Perhaps I'm not a proper photographer, even though I've been using chrome Leicas and Nikons for nearly 50 years... (!)
How much are good black paint repaints worth? I was once told by a Leica expert that it only increased the value of a Leica M2 by a couple hundred dollars.
As a user, not a collector, I used to wonder about all the fuss with BP bodies and the high prices.
But when I saw how old chrome bodies can look, it can be really unappealing, and even though a camera is a tool, you can also enjoy it, right? When the BP comes off, it is different, it's a character thing. I can accept it and it doesn't bug me at all - like do it yourself antiquing 😛

I think you would have to pay at least $2500 for a black paint M2/M4 with either very bad cosmetics (which could be considered cool and acceptable) or serious service needs (say $500-$1000 more).
When I wanted a black paint M, I got ahold of non-working beaters and had them stripped, overhauled, and repainted. The cost for everything, including the beater camera, was under $1k
I have not seen an original black paint M for under $3k for some time now.
Like everyone else mentioned, your best bet is to get a chrome Leica and repaint it yourself, or have someone else repaint it for you.
I want something green under 100$, a car, a pair of pants, a skateboard. As long as it's green, it's ok.
It going to be tough to find an original black paint Leica m for under $2000
A repaint of a chrome camera would be in your price range .
There are many nice black paint screwmount in the under $1000
Any older camera will need serviced , so plan on the cost of it .

And like a watch being polished during a service run, you can always have it re-done years down the line if you should want. A lot of people can do a good BP paint job; chrome is trickier.
Standards, II-s and III-s from the 1930's. Fine as a collector's item but in terms of picture taking, any of the standard chrome/black chrome M bodies would be a more sensible idea.
With the current prices of original BP M3/2/4 bodies - if I could swing around that kind of money, I'd rather make myself an á la carte MP instead.
Awesome deal, but the M4-P is black chrome and not black paint. I believe the OP is looking for a BP camera.
A black repaint m2/3 is worth around £700-1000 depending on overall quality of finish and condition
The M4-P exists with both brass and zinc top plates and, unless I am entirely mistaken, black ones with brass top plates are painted.
I can't wait until I reach your post count so I can give smart ass answers.
Well a UK dealer (I've bought from them in the past, no other connection) has one at £1099 - http://vintageclassiccamera.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32&products_id=3291 which sound pretty good. And Peter Walnes (another UK dealer) has a black paint factory repainted M2 at £1240.
Nope. I have one of the earlier brass-topped ones with the inset windows. It's black chrome, not painted. It wears down a bit like a gun does. Not wholly unattractive, however. That said, I'm hankering for a brassed black paint M9P.
Coincidentally enough, I found an original black-paint M4 today for a great price. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be an M4-MOT, so I bought it before someone else did. The former owner "touched-up" the paint, but the L seal is intact, and the camera appears to be a good shooter. I'll put some film through it tomorrow and see how it works.
