And then, why cigar ?

When an orthodox Leica user looks at my VC 35mm/f2.5,
he smiles, speaks, "nice, ..., but, ..., well,... you know,...
close, but no cigar !"

My answer is, "OK, I'll have close and cigar..."

I'm less polite, I'd say "Bite me!" 🙂

Wonderful book. One of my all-time favourites.

Gene

I read it when I was on a road trip to Western Australia with my (now) wife. Brilliant book. Not many manage to change the way you look at the world - for me, this did.

Anyone here read the sequel? Should I?

cheers,
Steve

Bruenhilde if someone said that to me (I have the pancake version of the CV 35/2.5, see the pic below) I would tell them to stuff it. This is a heck of a lens...

Peter,
is that a finder on top of your M6? Never seen one in that style.

Todd

Hey Peter_N! Mmm the CV 35mm pancake LTM lens is sweet, I got to use one once and really wanted one, however it was just at the time that Voigtlander discontinued it... I was all set to pay the $189 it cost new but the prices jumped to like $289 which was just a little too much for me a tthe time! BUGGER! No doubt they will become some super collector lens of the future! 😉

Yes I was lucky enough to get mine at the $189 price. Great lens and I really like it because it has a regular focus ring instead of a tab. The tabbed version of this lens (see Bruenhilde's pictures above) has one advantage over mine, it's closest focus is 0.7M whereas the closest a pancake 1 version will focus is 0.9M. And the tabbed version is still available. 🙂

Hey Peter, I have seen the new Voigtlander 35mm Pancake on Cameraquest and sure it has all the benfits that you mentioned but I really liked the idea of getting the original pancake (the Mk. I if you like...) simply because I thought that if I ever got a Leica IIIf (wish list camera) I could use it on that and perhaps any M body camera somewhere in the future.

Unfortunately at the time that it was being discontinued I was just getting serious about my range finders and had only just decided that I wanted to upgrade from my Rollei35. So I missed the boat.... I have noticed that you rarely see them up for auction as well. I think they may not have been that popular for some reason...perhaps some bad press or perhaps Voigtlander was still considered an unknown quantity at that time???

I read on Cameraquest that they have a really short focus throw which sound to me like it would be very handy, shame they didnt make the current Mk.II Pancake in LTM as well just so it would have been backwards compatible.

PS. Hey Pete, West Indies played Australia today in a one dayer, AUS 4/301 vs W.I. All gone for 185

Wow, Australia are unbelievable!

I understand the pancake 1 was made in smaller quantities than the "classic" version with the tab. Although the lenses are optically identical, the build is very different. The pancake is made with a brass barrel and rings and has a high quality anodized finish and was apparently pretty expensive to manufacture. The tabbed version is made of lighter materials but focuses 0.2M closer. My lens does have a very short throw so you have to remember to be careful with it when it is on the camera. I do like the lens though and I'm interested in this new Zeiss 35/2 lens but I'm going to keep this little guy whatever happens... 🙂 A sideways picture of the lens is attached so you can see how small it is. 🙂

Speaking of Lucas!

Speaking of Lucas!

I also had a 1965 BSA 650 Lighting and I currently have a 1973 Jaguar XJ6 Sedan (not worth anything, but I've put about 20 grand into it, I don't know why, I just like the styling).

So I can feel justified in slurring the good name of Lucas. Why do the British drink warm beer? "Because Lucas makes refrigerators!"
I don't know if it's true, but it sounds good.

I understand that Lucas made a great three position switch, marked "dim", "flicker" and "burn". 😉

Cheers,
Steve

While "Goggle-ling" I found that someone actually has resurected the Norton Commano! But like the new Nikon SP, it's priced for the rich, around $15,000+. See Norton 952. Pretty, but to much for my wallet.

Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.

LOL, you guys are too much...

I never had the misfortune to deal with Lucas electrics, but my uncle had an MG-TF that he autocrossed; Work on it all week, break it every weekend!

Hey, and that reminds me of a buddy who rode his BSA 441 Victor to work only one day a week because the rest of the time he was fixing what quit working the previous time.

Good one oldprof!! 😀 Lucas was seriously bad. My very first car was a mini that I used to rally & motor cross. If it rained you could count on being disqualified as a DNF. No matter how hard you worked on the electrics, something always went wrong. I haven't bought an English car since.

My introduction to Lucas was when I bought a used Triumph TR3 in 1961. It was a fun car and it actually ran pretty well. I had a good time working on it and driving it, but never entered any competitions. In 1963 I joined the Peace Corps and sold the car. Still miss it.
