Canon 7 with Canon 50mm F1.8 and Walz Vented Shade
Canon 7 with Canon 50mm F1.8 and Walz Vented Shade
The newly repaired Canon 7 with its lens and Men-in-Black Walz shade. This is the camera that was "Flagged" here at RFF on an EBay BIN. I have had the top plate off on the Canon 7 so took a chance. Everything works now, with the exception that the 35mm frame lines do not completely switch into place. After getting the meter to work and everything else to line up, including the parallax correction and meter calibration, it is not worth the risk to pop the top again. On the Canon 7 the 35mm framelines are so far out that it is just as easy to use the entire FOV and leave the 50 lines up.
Who says a Canon 7 isn't Sleek!!! Look at that Selenium Meter Window! And Accurate! Cool Shade! Looks so good that Leica tried the bigger-is-better on the ever-popular M5!!!
PostScript: Well two days of looking at those 35mm framelines not slipping into place and being inside taking care of Nikki's pneumonia and Nina's Bronchitis drove me crazy. I broke down the Canon 7 AGAIN. Turns out that the "meter needle tray" was preventing the frame selector mechanism from going all of the way to its 35mm frameline position. Bending the tray just enough for it to clear caused the meter needle to jam. I took the tray out. It also serves as a light baffle to prevent light from entering the camera and hitting the viewfinder. No problem with it getting into the film chamber, otherwise the frameline window would mess things up. The "flare" is slight, and only occurred with a bright flashlight aimed through the window, right into the viewfinder. Took it out on a bright day, angled it for the sun to enter the window, very slight "arch" of light when everything lines up like in "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark". Nothing compared to Leica RF patch flare. Meter is calibrated AGAIN; AR Setscrews are just right AGAIN; no way I'll get that done again in under two hours.... AGAIN...
So I'll be testing it as is. Not worth putting in the spare parts meter needle tray that is not deformed... I wonder how many Canon 7 meters do not respond to light because of the meter needle tray.
