Conscience? Indecision? Moral Dilemma? Or What?

...Lenses and film bodies hold their value, provided that I don't drop and break them...
My pre-ASPH Summilux 50mm was once dropped about 2.5 feet onto a concrete floor that was overlaid with ceramic tile. The result? A trip to the Leica NJ lens hospital. The verdict? No damage, no charge. This is one of the reasons I like Leica lenses.

In fact as an economist I have figured that buying $4000 Leica lenses, in the long run, is much more cost-effective compared to Canon/Nikon. The most expensive Leica lenses appreciate at the highest rates (Noctilux, Summilux), and there is virtually no risk of Leica changing mounts in the near future.
I am seriously tempted to use your statement as my signature line (with your prior permission, of course)!! 😉

Good news for my pre-a lux 😀

You might want to rephrase that a bit...English is not my mother tongue 😀

Hi,

FWIW, in the 70's I lusted after the CL and eventually found one and still have it in regular use. But I waited and searched for one second-hand and eventually found a trade-in that I could afford with both lenses etc. There were still new ones in the shops at the time and it did make me wonder when I bought it. But people will buy things and then realise they made a dreadful mistake...

Anyway, I wouldn't call it an investment, I'd expect what I paid for it in today's terms plus interest to make it an investment but it has given me a lot of photographs at a very low cost for the capital involved over many years. That's not something I'd say about my digital cameras...

Regards, David

Someone mentioned getting a used M9 instead. I would get a new M-E. The M9/M-E cameras in any case, at this point, have better color rendition, which I would charectize as looking more like color slide film, than that of the M240, despite the people who rave about the new camera. Maybe the color rendition will improve in the future after firmware updates, but I tend to be skeptical about the and consider the hype about the M240 as consumerism. We'll see.

Some less-than-enlightening tidbits:

-When in doubt, don't.

-He who dies with the most toys wins.

-When most people die, more often than not, their regrets are the things they didn't do, rather than what they did.

-Few things depreciate like purely digital-tech-based stuff. In no way will the M240 possibly be considered a classic anything.

-Rentals are a good way to scratch the itch and confirm that yes, you want it or that in fact, you don't really like it.

-Is it the camera you want, or the feeling of "upgrading?"

[flamesuit on] Paying 7k on a camera that you can't even put film in is a bit of a waste[/flamesuit]

I want an M240.

However, I'm hesitant to shell out $6950 out of pocket, so the alternative would be to sell my DSLR/SLR gear (which has seen very little use of late). Selling that gear would generate more than enough $$$$ to be able to afford an M240 (if/when I can find one).

Here's where I get stuck. Even with that kind of money in hand from the sale of my DSLR gear, I find it difficult to spend all of it on a one-time purchase of a single piece of camera equipment. It's money that I can use to fund other things, such as travel.

Does anyone else go through the same dilemma? I'd like to hear your experiences and how you resolved that dilemma.

Yup. I've started threads on this issue before. The bottom line is that I don't feel comfortable spending that kind of money on any one tool for myself, especially if it's a luxury purchase (i.e., a toy, and not a tool).

My D700 cost $1800 or so used and was bought for my wedding photography business. The day I permanently close up shop will probably be the day I sell it, my wife's, and all our lenses.

There's no need to feel bad about it; you just have a different value system. On a photography forum (especially one with a significant member base investing in boutique cameras), you're going to get lots of comments indicating there's nothing wrong with spending 6 or 7k on a camera. And in a way, there isn't. But if it doesn't gel with your value system, that's fine. I wouldn't buy a Leica if I won the lottery; I'm just not interested in dropping that kind of money on a camera. I'd rather invest it and put it toward an early retirement.

Oh, and to more directly respond to your question about how I resolve this kind of issue, I resolve it by only buying things I can justify, and selling them if and when I realize I can't. A couple of months ago, I was saving up to buy an x100s to take on a cruise with my wife. A few hundred dollars away from my goal, I realized I couldn't justify spending $1300 on a toy (or a non-work camera, if you will), especially with a baby on the way. I transferred the money into our savings account and took an SD1100 on the cruise instead. It's an old compact camera of my wife's that you can buy for around $40 on eBay. It worked just fine, I took lots of pictures, and we had a great time.

Will I ever get an x100s? Maybe. But to be honest, I'm not really in a hurry to get one. If I do, I'll definitely wait until it only costs a few hundred dollars, as to me, it's just not worth $1300 anymore.

I suppose it depends on your priorities.

What would you enjoy most? A new camera? Or a trip abroad somewhere? A restored 1959 Studebaker Lark? $7000 could get you any of those things. 🙂

To me I'd rather go some place interesting and enjoy taking photos with cameras I already have. But that's just my priorities.

Coincidence strikes...

I was just catching up on this thread, when my wife handed me the latest (September) issue of Mac Format. She was pointing out a piece about a projector, relevant to a new job we've picked up.

On the facing page there's a piece on the soon to be released Samsung Galaxy NX. The following left me wondering wether to laugh or cry...

"...a system camera like this gives you better picture quality to boast about all over your friends' Facebook feeds." 🙄

A digital Leica, which is apparently different from the other ones.

I know, I too was originally thinking this was about Volvos.

Made me chuckle and reminded me of the phrase

The real dilemma is "why are holding onto $7000 worth of gear you are hardly using?" Sell it. Then hold onto the money for several months. Then decide on what to spend it on.

exactly what is an M240?

The best machine gun in the world.

I'd never spend that much money on a single camera. Mostly because I could not use it without always being worried that it might break. And there are good enough cameras for about 1000$, which I think you would not really see a difference in the end.

OTOH though, finding your peace of mind could really be worth that price.

Yes, there are economical problems all across Europe, but Germany's economy is thriving for several years now. No need for development aid now. 🙂

I bet the average RFFer has 7K of gear (guns, cameras, cars, beanie babies, etc...) that they can sell in order to buy the M240.

It's a matter of your priorities.
