Good Day All,

what would be a the going price of a used M9?

I am thinking of getting a used M8 for $2K but if I can spend a few extra $$ and pick up an M9, I might do that.

Thanks,

Eric

I reckon you could pick one up for between $5K and $5500. Depends on how keen the seller is, same as anything.
I do see a US dealer selling new ones at $1000 off, so something is happening.
This of course will make you hold off, which then means the seller needs to tempt you a bit more and drops the price, you can see where this is going of course.
Buy one, they are great. I had one, but went back to an M8, and a film camera or two, happy with my lot.

If Leica releases anything that could be considered an M9 upgrade, then M9 prices are going to be affected, I'd probably try to wait, although I know how hard it is...

not M9, but couple M8.2's been listed at LUF classifieds, for price that was for M8 few months ago (1600-1800EUR). so prices are seem to have dropped a bit.

The M9 market is really inundated with wealthy casual photographers that appreciate how great it is, but will appreciate whatever comes out on May/10 even more for the simple fact that it's new (even if it isn't an appreciable upgrade or replacement to the M9). That being said, I see the M9 used prices to drop considerably—below $4000 to start and perhaps in the low to mid $3000 range by end of year. An EVIL or digital R would really transform the M9 used market...It could be worth $1000+ to OP to wait for the May/10 announcement.

How though?

The prices may drop below the the current $4900(ish) to perhaps $3900(ish) if there are some more 'user friendly' cameras introduced—like a DSLR or auto-focus EVIL. My cynical perception of at least a decent percentage of the current M9 ownership is that of the electronic or brand enthusiast who perhaps purchased the M9 knowing it was one of the most expensive cameras out there and therefore the logical 'best' camera not only for them but presumably for all. Not understanding or not thinking that it was at all possible that such and expensive modern camera didn't have auto-focus, didn't have a built-in flash, didn't take video, etc is common among many of the wall street crowd and other business men I have had conversations with about Leica. The price change is just my guess if a non-M cameras is introduced 10/May...

I think you're off the mark here. Most use M cameras because they want a mechnical rangefinder and want to use their small m lenses. The only way the M9 goes down is if the M10 is released and "corrects" the M9.

Not all digital M owners are idiots with too much money to burn. I would imagine most m digital buyers knew what they were buying when they bought it. Additionally, it doesn't matter where you work... stop stereotyping the "wall st" type. I actually work on wall street along with a lot of other people who do not make big bucks. I went to art school and it's just a job to me... not a lifestyle.

A non-M camera will have no effect on m prices. A new M camera, if done right, will.

+1

The release of other brand cameras does not influence me on what I am willing to pay for a piece of Leica gear.

. . . . . what does influence me is GAS!

With the used M9 that I purchased I see myself using it for a few more years even if Leica releases a new model. First of all I do not think I could afford the new camera, assuming they will price it up another 1 or 2 thousand above the M9-P and second I would like to see it on the market place for awhile prior to purchase.

. . . . . just my 2 cents on the subject.

EDIT: recently the price for used M9's that I have noticed have been between $ 4500 and $ 6200 USD. Pricing appears to be from condition and the sellors motivation to move the M9 for another piece of gear . . . . .

I passed by a shop today that had two used M9's in the window of varying condition. The cheaper one was priced at 3,400€ and the more expensive at 4,500€, roughly equivalent to 4,400 USD to 5,850 USD at today's exchange rates. No opinion, not in the market for one, just saying.

Cheers,
Rob

Firstly you say "most use M cameras" because it's a mechanical rangefinder, but it might not take most to change the price of something like the used M9 market, it might only take a few hundred M9s popping up to change it.

Secondly I think you skipped over much of my response while looking for inflammatory phrases; there was no generalization but rather a basing on my personal experience of those that people talk to me about my Leicas. I'm not a photographer by profession but always have a Leica in hand during business trips and meetings. I said "my cynical perception of at least a decent percentage of the current M9 ownership" bought for brand and the love of expensive gear, didn't say anything about "all digital M owners", after all most digital M owners I know of and hear about are on RFF and L-Camera Forum and they know their camera and their craft about as well as anyone possibly could.

Also I made no generalization about ""Wall st" types", I said: "common among many of the wall street crowd and other business men I have had conversations with about Leica." It is simply a way of explaining the rich businessmen I deal with on a daily basis that often spend their money freely without knowing what it's really being spent on. Obviously not every person that works on the acutual Wall Street comes down from their glass tower and tramples the poor while stepping into their Rolls.

Ultimately none of this really deserves your anger or my trying to justify anything to you, every one of my predictions is just my opinion, just as everything you predict is just yours, neither of us have a such a clear view of the future so as to state any prediction as fact.
