It is agreat lens, I use it quite a lot as an always carry around lens ... but it has no focussing tab and it is a hassle to uncollapse ... but apart from that great optical qualities.
I have a current version Elmar 50mm, black, mint - for sale. Comes with the box, pouch, hood, etc, as it does when new. $550.00 plus USPS shipping for CONUS only. Email me if interested.
Got to comment on the short shade for the 2.8. I put mine on and looked at the lens glass from an off axis position. You can get to about 40 degrees before seeing the glass. Then I changed it with the clip on vented shade which is much larger and sticks out further.
I can get to the the same position and no more before seeing glass.
My conclusion is the they both protect from stray light the same. The vented shade is no better, but appears as if it should be. The larger extension is negated by the larger diameter.
I may well use the 2.8 ring shade on the Summicrons in the future. My first tests do not reveal any problems.
I have had my eye on this lens for a good handy 50mm lens, but the new zeiss 50mm sonnar is looking more and more attractive being a little bigger but with a 1.5 appature. You might want to hold off and see how that lens pans out, but if you see a good deal on a elmar pick one up, you probably wont regret it unless you want more speed
I agree Avotious. I have been considering the zeiss lenses as well. I have always liked their lenses and the newer ones appear to be very good as well. JimG

yeah, I think its a neat idea with the zeiss lens, I think the length difference is about 10mm but it does have more heft. I really hope I get the change to hold one before I make the same buy you are thinking about
The 50/1.5 looks like it's worth waiting for. OTOH the sharpness of the new Elmar is outstanding at close distance, even wide open. If this is as critical to your work as speed, the new Sonnar may be a little disappointing. Zeiss to their credit, tacitly acknowledges this by limiting it's minimum focus to 0.9 meters. Even the 50/1.4 Summilux Asph. with it's expensive glass and floating elements can't match the tiny new Elmar for sharpness across the frame at 0.7 meters aperture for aperture unless stopped down below f/5.6.
