You would not believe how difficult it is to get off the Coca Cola grid. It cAn be done but you really have to get way out there.
If you could go anywhere and photograph for 2 weeks, where would you go?

That's what I like to do. I like traveling to familiar places and exploring them more intimately than a 2 week vacation allows. I travel dirt roads in Arizona often, and when in California, I photograph agricultural back roads, nameless subdivisions, beach-town alleys and interiors of people's homes and businesses.
This isn't to say that I don't enjoy traveling vicariously through the photos of far off lands by others. But I prefer making my own photos right around where I live.

wow......so many cool replies, very interesting to read about the places that you guys/gals would like to go to
.....I lived/studied in Florence for a year while I was in university and used/carried a Hasselblad every day....i was also fortunate enough to live/work in Paris for 6 months...I traveled all over Europe for a year and enjoyed it very much......I spent about 12 years in San Francisco and have been in Asia for the last 5 years.....I spent a year in India/Nepal/Pakistan.....and have been in South East Asia for the last 4 years.....I also visited a couple of places in North Africa as well......I have lots of photos from those trips, but the negatives/photos are stashed away at my parents house in Miami.........
as far as "dangerous places" go, I have traveled to Peshawar in Pakistan and along the border of Afghanistan......I always travel alone......I do not like to go with other photographers/people when I am concentrating on photography.... I feel more comfortable alone........if any of you guys take the time to look at my Flickr you will see a terrorist bomb blast that I was in, that eventually led me to being signed by Gamma........dangerous places can be fun, exciting and memorable............that said, I am very happy living out here in Bangkok and traveling around this part of the world......
for many reasons, Myanmar is a special place for me and I try to go there as often as possible.......some of you guys have mentioned some places that I would like to visit sometime in the future..........anyways, I picked up an extra 20 rolls of kodak pro image 100 film today just as "back-up".....I doubt that I will be shooting more than 10 rolls a day this trip, but you never know........I am super excited, I am leaving tomorrow morning and I am going to make the most out of this trip........
thanks to everybody for sharing their ideas........as far as getting away from the "Coca-Cola, Levi's, mobile phone thing" goes......Myanmar comes pretty close......real Coke is only available in "hi-class restaurants/hotels" in the big cities, but there is a ton of "fake coke" that is readily available.....a sim card costs 500USD in Myanmar, so most people rent them for 40USD a month.....not many people have mobile phones, genuine Levis are hard to come by, most of the stuff is fake..........
anyways, I am packing my bag now......and getting everything sorted out.....
I am a little surprised that nobody mentioned Myanmar as a destination that they would like to visit.....maybe I need to take some better photos to get some of you guys interested in that country (lol....that was a joke).......anyways, thanks again for making this thread an enjoyable read......

Getting two weeks off is just a fantasy, but maybe some day.
In my past life I spent a good bit of time in Northern Thailand, but at that time you could only enter Myamar during the day and had to exit..without your money in the evening. Many happy Christmas holidays at the Mai Sai Guesthouse with Christmas songs being sung across the river every Christmas Eve by a people that were severely repressed. My wife was born in a Khemer "concentration camp" and we will, if I can get away, probably visit Myamar, Cambodia and Thailand.
Looking forward, as always, to your images. Stay safe.. and thanks to all with the great suggestions.

I'm trying to imagine the book or website that would result from combining images and stories from all the travelers on this forum. What an interesting project it would be--truly an epic journey.
Personally I've not had the opportunity to travel outside of Canada and the Western US but if the good Lord were to give me the chance one thing I would truly love to see is the English countryside. I've been a country boy all my life and have always had an affinity for farmers and farming so I'm invariably drawn to images and stories of working farms and people in Britain. I'd like to see it in person and have the time to explore country roads and paths and to stop and visit with people along the way. I've spent a lifetime building, fixing and driving machinery of all types so things like tractor pulls, road runs, ploughing matches and machinery displays always attract my attention. Throw in some of the famous country fairs and I would be in heaven.
On a more local level I've lived in B.C. all my life and I've seen most of the province but there is still so much to see. I'm an avid railfan and I could spend a week alone just exploring the backroads of the Fraser and Thompson River canyons between Hope and Ashcroft. I've seen every region of the province but there isn't anyplace I could go and not spend days exploring within a few miles of a base camp or motel. Same goes for the rest of Canada.
And Vancouver...what can I say. I live 35 miles out of town yet I rarely visit this magnificent city. How silly am I?
And, on a final note, last fall a buddy and I took a railfan acquaintance from Texas on an excursion up the Fraser Canyon and he was enthralled by the scenery that we passed through. My friend and I had seen it many times before and while we knew it's a beautiful area to visit it was a real eye-opener to experience the enthusiasm of someone seeing it for the first time. Traveling to faraway place is great but I think we can all use an occasional lesson on how to appreciate what we see every day...
