lens/body choices

Both of the Leica's are Gone. Anyone reading this thread grab them?

I would like to thank whoever it was that saved me from myself.

There was an M3, with 35mm 'cron and eyes I kept my eye on, for a week it's highest bid was sub $200, then in the final 12 hours I worked out how big of an overdraft I could pull off and bidded that much. It ended up going for $30 more than my highest bid. On behalf of my bank manager and myself... thank you who-ever out bidded me. 🙂

Stu 🙂

James there's no functional difference between a Canadian made lens and a German one. Presumably you're a user and not a collector, so buying Canadian can sometimes result in a favorable price comparison with an identical lens made in Germany.

Last year I got a Leitz 90/2.8 (Canadian) on eBay for about $450 I think. At around the same time a German version of the lens went for $850. Doesn't make sense but it can happen quite a lot.

"James does that mean you've settled on 40mm for your lens choice?"

Probably. Seems to be an obvious choice with this body. Gandy told me it might be tough to use the 35 cron w/o a finder but really praised the 1:1 R3 finder. I'm guessing a larger finder makes focussing shallow DOF shots a little easier.

The long and short of it is, my wife and I started a portrait business a year ago and it is going surprisingly well. I use a 10d with an assortment of lenses. Somewhere along the way I all but stopped taking the SLR on family outings etc. Kind of 'lost the fun' of it now that I'm semi-professional. So, I've been looking for something to get me back into the fun of shooting and the RF format seems to be the ticket. I could be wrong, and the whole kit might be for sale in a few months. Anyway, it seems to be worth a try. Thanks for all the info and advice.

James, congratulations on the success of your business venture. I'm impressed!

You have 3 choices among 40mm lenses:

Leica 40/2 Summicron-C or its twin the Minolta 40/2 Rokkor, both from the '70s, are king of this range & can be found on the used market.

Rollei 40/2.8 Sonnar is another premium lens in this range, designed by Carl Zeiss & licensed to Rollei. It is available new at B&H for $650.

The new Voigtlander 40/1.4 Nokton is highly desired for its extra speed & compact design. It will be interesting to see how it is received once somene can shoot some pictures with it. For example, there is fairly unanimous agreement that the Leica 50/2 Summicron is a superior lens to the 50/1.4 Summilux for general photography. In order to achieve a maximum aperture of f/1.4, other compromises had to be made by Leica in the design of the Summilux. Similarly, the old Nikkor 50/1.4 rangefinder lens of the '50s was/is a fabulous lens, the favorite among pros of the day. However, it was optimized to be shot wide open & was great at maximum aperture & at f/2 - perfect for low light shooting & for specialized subjects like portraiture. However, this lens was considered to be a dog by f/8.

Different horses for different courses. Depends on your shooting style.

Yes, the increased magnification should make focusing shallow depth of field shots more precise. It would certainly seem that Cosina released the ultra fast 40 Nokton with it to underscore this fact. It would also appear to be the camera of choice for Cosina's other ultra fast lenses like the the 50/1.5 Nokton & the 35/1.2 Nokton - whether you use the latter with an auxiliary finder or estimate with the built-in 40mm framelines. It also has advantages for more precise focusing with other wideangles, which can be tricky to focus & sometimes give a problem to autofocus cameras. Finally, this camera should be able to handle a telephoto faster than the f/3.5 that Cosina currently offers. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see that the next new lens from Cosina is a 90/2.8.

Happy shopping.

I've been looking on ebay this week for 40mm Summicrons or Rokkors. Funny thing is that there are 3 CL body/lens combinations up for auction right now but no lenses. Haven't seen one in a while.

He was one of the first sellers I "found" on Ebay way back when. I always though he offered decent stuff, good honest descriptions, mostly without reserve, so they sell for fair prices.

Quite true. I've bought one item from him (a new Rokkor CLE 40/f2), and chose not to bid on a second (a much less than mint M4), based on his honest reply to my email. A very good guy to deal with.

Huck, you obviously "need" a CLE kit! Sort of like a more discreet and compact alternative to the Bessa-R2a. 😉

Doug, you wouldn't be trying to drain my wallet, would you? 😉

This forum can drive a man to the poor house. I need another rangefinder kit like an octopus needs a 9th leg. 😀
