New Improved TMax400

Just posted a couple of shots done with the New Tmax 400 in Tmax developer. I used the times for the old Tmax 400 and it looks OK. It will need some finetuning. probably slightly longer time, 8 min instead of 7 and a slight decrease in agitation (either 2 turns/60 sec or 3 turns/2 min). remarkably finer grain though and hugely improved high light rendition. Use tag " KODAK 400-2TMY" on flickr and you can find the shots. There should be 60 in total, with various developers.

I am down to three rolls of the new Tmax. I will do one run with D76 again and possibly another test with the Tmax developer. So far it behaves well in most soups. Seems to ned a bit more time in D76 and in the Tmax. Next run I will add a minute to the D76 !:! (11.5 rather than 10.5) and in the Tmax I will do it for 8 minutes and cut agitation to two turns/min.
It is a seriously good film - easier to deal with than the old Tmax. It is not as forgiving as Tri X, but if you are using a metered camera it will work well. For more "guestimate" exposures, stick with Tri X. I will shoot the last of the new Tmax with a M2 and no meter (just guestimate) as that is my usual way of shooting.
I am happy that Kodak has shown that they haven't forgotten us, the "Monochromes".
I have also tried a bit of the fixer problem. Tmax had a tendency to turn magenta/pink unless you used fresh fix all the time. I usually do 60-65 rolls in a gallon of kodafix. The last batch was at the 50 rolls mark and though there is a bit of a cast to it, much less than in the reference roll of Tmax 400.

Tom A, thanks for the update. I can't wait to try this film. I will be using D-76 so your times/temp/agitation are welcome. I will also try HC-110h as it is so easy to use. PLEASE, keep us posted. (I have the 11.5 min. for D-76 noted)

My roll of T-Max-2, donated by Tom, is "in the can". I am going to use the Gainer via Honus/Robert treatment aka Rodinal/X-Tol blended to 1 part Rodinal to 50 parts X-Tol 1:1. Won't get to it for several days at the best. Time will be a bit of a guess, but based on Tom's experience, I will add a bit to the default.

Folks over at the Leica Users Group are using it developed in Xtol. No clue where they got it. I guess I should ask, hey?

At the beginning of this thread I paraphrased an email from John Sexton. In that email he stated that he developed the NEW Tmax400 using D-76 1:1 for 7 minutes. That seemed short to some of us but I checked and that is what the email said. Since then I have found that Mr. Sexton develops OLD Tmax400 rated at 250 (the same rating he uses on the new) in D-76 1:1 at 68F for 12.5 minutes he says only that he uses 5 seconds agitation every 30 seconds. He mentioned nothing about initial agitation.

That is quit a reduction in development time. Maybe the 7 minute was a misprint.

Freestyle has a 'Tmax400 currently out of stock' message on their site. There expected delivery date is January 8, 2008.

B&H shipped some 120 recently

This was posted at the Large Format Forum yesterday.............

I just received 5 propacks of 120 TMAX 400 from B+H. 4 packs are the new stuff, one pack the old. Fortunately, the new stuff is marked as '400TMY-2' so that can tell them apart when it comes time to develop.

That is very good news, if I wasn't off to Mexico, I would order some NOW. But I will wait until I get back. Whenever, that is. I will post when I get back.

FreeStyle has changed their TMax400 posting. It is now back to 'out of stock.'

Thanks John for the good words... and Wayne for the pdf Link.

Does anyone know just when the new version is available? Further, it seems to me
that BOTH the old and new are called Kodak Professional Tmax 400 Film...
with Tmax 400 like this, in the new one.

This is for Tom or anyone who can get his hands on the new Tmax 400:
I'd love to see comparison development tests with Tmax developer and HC-110.

Thanks and cheers,

Oh my god, is that going to produce a lot of confusion. Tmax, Tmax400, TMY, TMX is bad enough.

I was placing an order on Freestyle and sent an email regarding availability of TMY-2; as of 1/2 they still had not received shipments, so their only stock was the "old" emulsion. I'll buy some TMY-2 on my next Freestyle order.

I just received 20 rolls of TX, which are headed to Mark in Ecuador, plus a 100ft roll for myself, so yeah, it's demand. ;)

Resurrecting this thread, I processed my only roll of TMY-2 yesterday, and I knew the second I saw the negatives that it's a winner. I could hardly wait for the film to dry!
