New Improved TMax400

Bob,

Thanks so much. I had a good shooting day that day ... the light was good, and I gave both my SPs a workout plus my OM-1n was in action.

I used a combination of Rodinal & X-Tol. (Actually, it is K-Tol, Kentmere's version of Kodak X-Tol.) The formula has been posted here by Honus, who got it from Gainer on APUG. There are 3 dilutions, high, medium & low, which contain varying amounts of X-Tol. For this one I used the medium dilution:

3 ml Rodinal
150 ml X-Tol
150 ml water

For developing times, the starting point is 90% of the times on the Massive Dev chart for X-Tol. TMY-2 supposedly has a slightly different time than the previous version of TMY, but I didn't make any adjustment.

In this case, time was 7 min 52, with 30 seconds initial agitation and 3 gentle inversions every 3 minutes thereafter.

I may have used a yellow-green filter for these shots as well, but I can't remember.

Thanks again,

Earl

For those who can buy it, the 23rd Jan issue of the British Journal of Photography has a very favourable review of the new version T-Max 400.

Does anyone know if "The Massive Dev Chart" (i.e. @ digitaltruth.com) has been updated accordingly with the new Tmax info?

I have yet to try this film - I've got too much Tri-X in my system still :D

It appears from the Freestyle Photo website that they have received their order from Kodak. Whether it is TMY-2 or not is still not clear. I emailed them for clarification. I will post as soon as I hear something.

Here is their return email:

All the "new" Kodak T-max we have received still say TMY on the box
(just as in the images on our website).

There has been no mention from Kodak of a TMY-2

Thank you.

They are more in the dark than we are.

I just processed a few rolls of this myself and will post some pix when I get them scanned in. I haven't shot Tmax since college (I am a Tri-x man) but at first glance the negs look very nice...

That's different from the response I got from a different rep. I didn't save it, but she said all the current stock was the "old" emulsion. That was in early January.

Dave: I'll update Massive Dev with my findings once I get more and do some more controlled testing.

I was planning on buying a 100' roll, the image on the site still has the old packaging so I think I'll have to wait unless I buy some direct here at the Kodak store. Doing the latter is a bit complicated as I'm not an employee or ex-employee. I can order in my father-in-law's name, but it's still a bit convoluted. Plus, it's a special order to get it all the way from the coating and packaging floor to the store a few hundred yards away.

FreeStyle Photo has 120 and 35mm-36 exposure listed on their website for the NEW IMPROVED Tmax400. I just ordered some 120. They said limited supply. Trius could be right, there is demand for film. I hope he is. He somehow has a spy or something in Kodak. Don't blow his cover.

LOL ... I'll probably break down and buy some 35mm cassettes. But first I'll call the Kodak store on Monday and see about getting 100' bulk. Anyone have a bulk loader they want to sell? My current loader has a nearly full roll of Tri-X, guess it's time to buy another loader.

Now, there is a rumor of (another) improved TriX to vision 2 and/or 3 technology. Kodak is, if this is true, working hard to keep me happy.

Another confirmed report of B&H shipping boxes of 4x5 TMY-2.

A related question: I just received a couple of 50 sheet boxes of 400T-Max with an expiration of 2010. There is a red label that is part of the packing that refers to "sharpest 400 film" and "new development times". I haven't bought film in quite awhile and am wondering if this is the newest 400T-Max or the previous iteration. The notch code is a single triangular notch.

Seems like Kodak doesn't really want anyone to have the new film.
I went to a couple of stores in the past week and asked for TMY-2. They said they'd seen it on the Kodak site, have had customers asking, but all Kodak is offering them is the old version.
Guess Kodak is trying to get rid of the old film before unleashing the upgrade.
