Finally at home...
It's funny because I feel that the Silver is the one that looks and feels way more plastic.
I agree. I have and love the black one.

picked up a 55mm f3.5 on the big auction site non ai version but after the scalloped version sold as not working for £9! after a bit of a strip (comes apart very easily) and a quick ai conversion I'm very impressed.
All wide open a few test pics cropped to 11in 300dpi long side.

I only paid £1100 for a good as new one with very low shutter count from a dealer, I went for the black one and think it's great especially if you have a load of old nikkors. Cheaper than a secondhand 35mm summicron!

Nikkor lenses (most of them Ai or Ais) are by far the most represented brand in my cabinet. In fact I use them all on my D610 already. Sounds like you got a great camera Fraser and I hope it serves you well!

Df with 43-86mm,
Picked up one of the infamous 43-86mm zoom on the big auction site to see how bad they really are!
Was a bit disappointed nothing wrong with it!
Shot wide open and back-lit.

The 43-86 gets an unfair shake - the later ones are actually pretty decent so long as you don't mind distortion. I had a pre AI that was nasty, but my last model one is OK.

My one is a very early pre ai one, ok its not up to modern standards but if someone had given me one for my Nikon F in the mid 60s I think I would have been over the moon!
