Went yesterday to the teachers strike in Manchester. Used the X100 alongside my RD1.

I took my X100 down to a historical reconstruction day near us today. I'm in awe of the image quality this little camera can produce, not just the sharpness but the colours and the way the lens draws and captures subtleties of light. Staggering.

Thanks Richard - that was what I was thinking when I was taking them funnily enough - we're not very far from Holland here in the windy east of England and the light was coming through original leaded light windows - but what impresses me is how well the camera captures that feel in the images.

It does have some quirks in handling and the way it sometimes refuses to wake up for no apparent reason infuriates me, but all in all I'm super-impressed.

Your photos certainly do exemplify what you claim. Very beautiful light indeed. Vermeer comes to mind.

I tried everything, it's the first time I got to use one for more than a couple of minutes. zone focus seemed like the right thing to do when flashing into a dark crowd at f8-f16. in "easier" light the AF did a good job most of the time.
I did enable the auto-iso function as a test but didn't really need it so far, I'm sure it can be handy but it's nothing essential.
I'm not sure which firmware is on mine, if it's not up-to-date, is it worth updating?

how do I activate the small AF target (just did the update)? and is it normal for the MF wheel to be so unevenly responsive (well not the wheel, mechanical operation is smooth, but the actual scale/focus)?

Simon,

Go into the menu and look for "corrected AF frame" and turn it on. I may have the exact terminology wrong but you should be able to find something like this. It will only show up with the OVF, of course.

EDIT: This is a feature of the most recent firmware upgrade. If you have 1.00 or even 1.01, you will not have this feature. To check your firmware version, turn off the camera, press the DISP button, and turn it back on. /EDIT

As for the focus ring, yes, it is supposed to change focus faster if you turn the wheel quickly and slower if you turn the wheel slowly. Either way, it takes way too many turns for it to be useful to me. People will argue that the focus ring is supposed to be for fine-tuning focus after you use the AF/AE lock button but, personally, I would have much preferred a more responsive manual focus.

I just did the update and already had this feature activated, I thought it was something else. thanks!
