You're right, the infinity lock is indeed quite obtrusive.
It is very easy to disable the infinity lock. Just unscrew the flat screw at the back (a pair of needle nose pliers works fine). The whole thing comes off and just put it away (i usually forget were it is and they are lost forever). If you are going to be using the lens, with no intentions of ever trading it in, you can also file down the "cam" that is used to lock it. I usually do this to all my "infernal" - sorry "infinity" lock lenses. Much better ergonomics and you know that no collector is ever going to harass you for it. I have seen some of them visible pale when seeing my black paint S-cron 50 rigid with the brassing from filing away the cam!
