As I am thinning out the "inventory" a little I am thinking about pieces of photographic equipment that I've sold in the past. This of course leads to...

What pieces of photographic equipment have you sold and regretted selling?

I have a few but I'll start it off with #1 on my list. I had two absolutely plum Contax N Digital bodies and a 85/1.4 lens that I unloaded last year. The cameras were getting up there in years and though they were low mileage I thought that, with the crappy economy, the time was right to sell.

Wrong.

Not only do I miss those cameras immensely but I compounded the error by selling the 85/1.4 N mount lens, possibly the finest lens I've owned. I figured I wouldn't use it much with the film versions of the N so off it went.

Let's hear it. What have you sold in the past and why do you miss it today.

The one that got away...

I sold Elmar-M 50/2.8, regretted, got another one.

I sold Color-Skopar 28/3.5, regretted, got another one.

I sold combo of M3 and M4, regretted, got M2.

I hope I'm getting a tiny bit smarter every time I regret selling something.

35 Summilux ASPH. That's the only one.

Selling the my old Nikkor 180/2.8 ED to make tuition one semester in college was painful, but that was the correct decision so I don't regret it.

Sug- With the lenses you mentioned was it the optical qualities, a look, you missed or was it the handling of the lenses? Or both, or neither?

Also, did you go for the M2 over the M3 the second time around because of the frame line choices?

I asked my brother this question and he had the same lens in response! The manual focus version in particular, though he liked the AF version as well. That lens definitely had a certain "look".

At this point, I have not experienced any seller's regret yet. Thank goodness. Then again, any gear that left me were spare copies of my existing stash.

Cheers,

I have thought long and hard. I cannot think of a piece of photo gear that I sold that I regret doing so.

Now if you asked about automobiles, the mint 1932 Ford V-8 coupe that I bought in 1957 and sold in 1965 would lead the list. But you asked about photo gear.

the only thing I really, truly REGRET selling
is my 1966 50 Lux ( i have a 1989 lux...a Beauty)
but it was the Exquisite Patina and worn out barrel that i miss

so whoever now has it and YOU want to sell it
I welcome YOU with open arms....😀

I have to admit that I once had a 50mm lens that had extreme coma, vignetting and focus shift, was very slow to focus and weighed a ton.

The slower Summilux ASPH that replaced it was a much more practical and technical perfect lens, but I do occasionally miss that old Noctilux.

It sold for about a third of it's current value 🙁

I hesitate to sell things worried that there may be a void in my life when they are gone and regret will overpower me at some stage.

It hasn't happened yet ... my M8 has only been gone a week and I can tell I'm not going to miss it!

For a long time I thought I screwed up for trading 2-Pentax MG's w/winders & 1 Nikon FG (black body) for a near mint Yashicamat 124G w/leather case & box...
Many years later I know I made the right choice...I hope to never rid myself of the Mat...

I'm a big fan of small lenses because they enable me to shoot what I want, when I want, and how I want to shoot. I tried and sold some larger lenses, but rarely regretted it if not at all. I felt the size of the lens was getting in my way.

I really liked Elmar-M for its size when collapsed, not too modern yet not too "sleepy" rendering, no need of hood (good flare resistance) and quite good handling (for a collapsible lens).

The Color-Skopar 28/3.5 was chosen for its size. A pure fun snap glass. 3.5 is fast enough for me as I shoot at 1600 speed most of times.

These two lenses are already discontinued and I don't want to search them all over again. I am keeping them for good. I think C-Biogon 35/2.8 could win a similar spot in my heart. Will see about that. (so far, it seems that way)

For M body, I went from

M6 to M4 - realized I don't need or want buit-in meter, liked "classic" built quality.

M3 added to M4 - liked simple, bold framelines, also liked M3 style cotrols.

Then put M3 and M4 for sale to get MP - M3 style control and ergonomics, 35/50 simplified frame line (bought modified), it probably outlasts me, light meter wasn't part of decision making.

M2 joined MP - It is basically a classic version of my modified MP. It turned out I liked M2's framelines (bolder, wider) even more than MP.

M2 is also really a good combination of M3 and M4 and doesn't have anything that I don't need (several FL, meter/battery, selftimer, etc) and I'd be totally OK with just having two M2s.

So I guess, at least for me, KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) rule works. 😀

Donald,

You can buy mine if you really miss the Noct ;-)

A man with a Frankenfinder can have no equipment regrets, it's written in the Leica initiation code of conduct.

Powerful words indeed, Helen.

Lenses I regret selling:

1) Noctilux f/1.0 (Mint)
2) 50 Summilux ASPH (Mint)

After my election campaign I will save up to buy another 50 Summilux ASPH.

All very logical Sug, makes sense!

I regret selling my CLE with a 40 summicron. it's my constant companion when I want to travel light and my everyday bring along camera. Oh and it takes good pictures. Only thing I sort of wish it had an AE lock. I'm sure a day will come that I will buy one again.

Kent,

I'm sure your M8 would never speak to you again if you sold the Noctilux - or even said that in earshot of it : cameras have feelings.

Donald.

Regrets

Regrets

A black paint canon vtdz , it's not supposed to exist .
Someone found it wrapped in a towel when restoring a sailboat in Hawaii
An ebay find - had it rebuilt , sold many years ago .

Or the summitar coated marked luftwaffen eigentum .the real thing .

These are the only two that I will probably never see again. Both very rare
