you can use silver efex as a plugin in photoshop, works like a filter (and applies itself automatically in a new layer).![]()
Thanks. I should have said Photoshop Elements, and I only own the Aperture plug-in version of the Nik tools anyway. It's good stuff, though.

Great shot, love the way OOF areas are rendered. Super smooth but not as perfect as the 50 Lux ASPH with a little more character. Love the '2' theme, with the two men in the foreground and the two people walking in the background.

Does any compared the Leica 35mm Summilux ASPH and this lens? Does those two lens have too much difference? Which one is better? I just sold my CV 35/1.2 and want grab a 35lux ASPH. Does any have any suggestion?
Thx.
Thx.

I just gave my 35/Lux ASPH to my cousin because I prefer the Nokton. I have compared the two, and the Leica is preferred if faster/street focusing is required. It's focusing tab makes it faster to focus and it's smaller and lighter. It has a little more contrast wide open. At f/1.4 the lenses are similar in sharpness all over and contrast is increased on the Nokton to be a little closer to the Leica. The Nokton is a little more flare resistent and distortion is very similar. The f/1.2 Vs f/1.4 stop advantage is barely noteworthy in practical use. I feel they both have similar build quality as this particular CV lens is built wonderfully well to Leica standards.
From f/2 they're very similar and by f/2.8 onwards they're almost the same. The main differences can be seen at f/1.2-1.4 where 'I' personally prefer the Nokton. The Lux out of camera looks a little punchier due to the higher contrast but a little PP on the Nokton images at 1.2 turns in preferable results, especially in low light where high contrast lenses can be too contrasty, but I never experienced this with the Lux in practical use.
I still have both lenses and compare them if there are any particular images you'd like to compare. I feel there's no need to factor in the new FLE V2 model as it's almost the same lens as the V1. But I think if you look at the images in this thread and images from the Summilux ASPH in other threads it's easy to see that the images from the Nokton have a wonderful feel to them, at least IMHO.

Thanks.I will see other threads and compare those two lenses by myself. I hope selling the Nokton won't let me regret.
You'll be back, unless you love the Summilux ASPH, which is easy to do

Could you please test your lens (or from your experience) that in what conditions it gives silky smooth bokeh? I believe when it is wide open and the background is far from the focus point. Otherwise I think it gives cluttered (similar to other noktons) busy bokeh...Is that true? I never had one of those but I checked almost all images in flickr...
Look at this one:

leicashot's images posted on this page are quite silky, although not much in the first one. Could you please post the values for the shots? Thanks,

Well if you're looking for bokeh like the Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH no 35mm lens in the world will do that, except for (possibly) the new Zeiss ZF Distagon 35/1.4. But, thats what I love about this lens. The bokeh is unique and shows more character than the bokeh of the 35 Summilux ASPH.
Tree branches and foliage are always going to be the worst for bokeh, especially twigs on trees. Your example is one of a challenge for just about any lens 50mm and under. In terms of bokeh, the closer the focus point to camera, combined with greater background distance will always result in smoother more shallow looking depth of field, but of course this is always dependent on the objects' shapes and sizes in the foreground/background.
Also the Nokton has shallower depth of field too so that can also affect the outcome of both shallow depth of field, and focus accuracy. The fact that the lens costs $979 compared to $5000 is only a small consideration when you factor in all the other attributes between the two great lenses...one thing's for sure. No one on this planet could prove to me that the Leica is not only 5x the price, but 5x better. Personally i'd be inclined to think the opposite

I never saw "busy" bokeh with mine. I love the clean, but not boringly perfect way the lens renders OOF areas from f1.4-f5.6 (not much OOF left beyond that
), and f1.2 is the 'magic mode'.

Well this thread has blown my current plan out of the water. I even signed back up here on RFF after a few years out haha, was trying to cut my internet time down! Oh well.
So, I had landed on grabbing a 35 Cron ASPH, even though I'm a bit of a speedfreak and like life below f2 at night, I wanted an APSH, and the Lux is just crazy expensive, even used, and the Cron ASPH looks great.
NOW, after raising about a grand I decided to look around, (Im trying to be patient this time, I'm over buying/selling glass) and found this thread, and it's seriously making me want one. I have a 50 1.5 Nokton and end up using it more than a 50 Cron, it's given me some of my favorite frames. I used to think it was big, now I don't even notice the size on an M3 or M6, feels great, and in winter, I can use it easily with gloves on.
That said, and I think I know the answer, but, 35mm 1.2 over the 35 Cron ASPH?
I'm also thinking, IF they discontinue the 1.2, the price will only go up, whereas the Cron's usually go down...and at the moment, or in the next few weeks I'll have the cash to comfortably buy a 35, so now, size aside, I'm leaning towards the Nokton.
PS- Anyone have the 50 1.5 Nokton as well? That would really give me a good idea how big The Beast is since I use the 50 1.5 all the time.
Thanks!
Bryan

I believe (IMHO) that the Nokton produces better results between f/2 and f/4, and obviously much better from 1.2-1.4. The Summicron ASPH is a sweet lens combining sharpness and size but it's rendering never had the effect the Nokton has on me. I had the Nokton 1.5 as well, and the 1.2 is a much more satisfying lens to use. A little behind in sharpness and contrast wide open, but with a much more interesting result, as you've seen from this thread.

Much appreciated! You're right, the samples I've seen here have basically answered anything I'd want to know without even having to ask, so I think I'll be pulling the trigger here sometime in the next 2 weeks! It's such a standout lens among every fast piece of glass I've looked at, Leica or not.

On size: Out the gate I prefer the smaller lenses...but I did notice a change in preference when I got my Noctilux. I liked the results and overnight I forgot it was a lot bigger than my other lenses. The conundrum between the Summ ASPH vs. the Nokton f/1.2 may wind up being the same.

Simon,
Thanks for that, it helps seeing the 50 and 35, it's not as big as I was picturing in my head. You're photos were also a drug that helped me get addicted to the 35 1.2, I'm definitely picking one up in the next few weeks, size be damed, I'd rather love the photos I can make.

PS - A friend asked me what I wanted for XMas, and I sent him your Blurb link,, we'll see if he comes though this week haha, I'm looking forward to it, in person rather then your blog on my monitor, always nice to have printed material I think, vs. a monitor. Were you pleased with Blurb's quality?
cool beans!
all the hard cover versions I've had in hands were very good, I've had a few problems with the soft cover versions as some came out with a slight colour tint, but blurb have been very easy and nice to deal with and replaced the 'faulty' copies immediately.
