If you're travelling for the sake of enjoying yourself rather than getting the perfect photo, the zoom is a better choice. Juggling two lenses and a body while you're at a great scenic spot just kind of ruins it.

If the IQ of the zoom is good enough for your needs, if it's fast enough and you don't pay too much of a dof penalty then why not?
Edit: Having to change lenses while travelling can sometimes mean missing the moment. Also, the less weight and bulk the better. Zooms are popular for a reason - they're practical.
Decide for yourself about the pros and cons of any IQ and lens speed issues.

Would the zoom keep your sensor cleaner? I've never had a digi, but my buddy who shoots DSLR bought an 18-200 for that reason. Dirt can't get in if you're not changing lenses?

I wouldn't rely only on the zoom lens. Take the zoom and the 35 with you. Use the zoom 90% and put the 35 only on when you need better aperture.

Never had a problem with that either - knock wood. I've been pondering the zoom too but for decreasing mobility issues. I've heard mostly good things about the zoom but I like both the 18 and 35 so much I can see leaving them behind except for quick jaunts. Even then I'd probably put one or the other in my pockets.

I'm willing to plead ignorance here, but wouldn't it be terrible to have the same set of spots on every picture of a whole trip?

what interestes me about the zoom is...
with the zoom on the body i really wont need to carry a bag when out shooting...extra cards/batteries would easily fit in my jeans pocket.
2 lenses would necessitate a bag...i don't like lenses in jean pockets.

Check the EXIF file of images you've taken with the zoom over the past few months. If a great majority are in the FL's with an AOV equiv to a 35mm and an 18mm, then the primes should be good. Otherwise, the zoom may be of more use.

Two bodies two lenses vs zoom.
The way I look at it... First I am not normally a zoom person.. However, I was big into zooms when I was using my Nikon dslr.
I hate changing lenses in the field.. Which is why I like two lenses two bodies. Wide like a 21/24/28 on one body and a 40/50 normalish... On the other. If it appears that I may need a 90 it goes in the messenger bag along w/ the wide angle body.
The other two body two lens combo I use is either a Sigma dp2m or Fuji xp1 or x100 as one of the two bodies and the rx100 as the second body. Since most of my shots are in the 40-50 range anyway lately, the rx100 zoom covers other 20-30% of the stuff I need. The rx100 iq IMHO is pretty good, so not much of a compromise.
I never go on vacation w/o two camera bodies. My last vacation, I used x100 and rx100.
In general the way I feel about going on vacation w/ a camera.. U are out there to enjoy yourself and if that vacation involves others.. It gets down to be good to the others around u. Don't be that ugly photographer that everyone keeps on waiting for. Thankfully I have a long suffering wife that understands but I am not going to push it.. If the situation calls for it, I will shot everything w/ the rx100.
From what I have read the Fuji zoom seems to up there w/ the best of them. I get to find out by next week, since I found a used deal on a xe1+zoom for a price I just could not resist.
If u are going out on vacation by yourself or others of like mind, take what is right for what u intend.
Sometimes vacation gets back to keep it simple, enjoy your vacation, c the sight and enjoy the company.

i never consider going to new york a vacation...it's more like going home for me.
i visit friends and go to favourite spots (mostly restaurants, delis and bakeries)...so photography is an important part of any trip there...here in edmonton i always always leave the house with a camera...kit, bag or solo, but there is always a camera nearby...new york is no different.
which makes me think i need to keep things the same as i would here...2 bodies and 2 lenses...18/35...finally, settled in my head.

Yeah, if you can do 700 pictures with a batch job, could work. I still think the zoom is the way to go. Like you say, "...no bag..."

Making an assumption here, but Im guessing that most vacations for you are going to be strongly photography based. Therefore I don't see that concentrating on your photography and your equiptment will take anything away from your enjoyment of the vacation (it would actually enhance it for me). But like you said, one lens, no bag, and a couple memory cards in the pocket might be liberating.
Unless I'm going somewhere on business (which is typically a one camera and one lens situation), I will always bring as many lenses as I want for vacation. Many times the lenses and a bag will be left behind in the hotel room and I will only bring out the one camera and a lens of preference.
