Leica to announce a new M-mount M6 film camera in Oct 2022

I don't know, I'm with Godfrey, red dot or no red dot... it does not matter. I look at the camera very minimally. Whatever is cheaper used is my motto.

I will say the red dot is not nearly as bad as those pest control company vans that drive around town with gigantic cockroaches on the roof. Talk about brand awareness. Not that I can remember the name of the company that does that. There is also this muffler shop down the road that has a 30 foot King Kong in the parking lot holding a muffler over his head like it's Fay Wray or something. Someone had to point it out to me because I was just looking at the mufflers. The things that spring from the mind of man. Obviously we're evolved. That being said, I've never known a chimpanzee who had a 30 foot King Kong in front of his muffler shop, so maybe not. Perhaps Leica should be congratulated for showing a little restraint. Maybe Leica could do an M3 reissue with a red dot. Put a little frame around it so that it matches the rangefinder/viewfinder windows. Probably no one would notice.

I will say the red dot is not nearly as bad …
The biggest offender in aesthetics is Canon with their advertising scribble on the front of the T-70 and T-90.

In a similar vein, perhaps Leica could scribble this next to the red dot: “Connoisseur film camera. Total manual control experience. Rangefinder focus.”

If the reissue is an M6, there will be plenty of room on the otherwise blank top plate for that.

Wow. Seventeen pages in and no one has said he doesn’t care what kind of camera Leica makes as long as they make a profit so they can stay in business. There is usually a whole crowd of people who chime in with that little nugget of wisdom when Leica comes out with yet another limited edition camera.

It seems like Leica is jumping the gun on an M6 reissue. The 40th anniversary of the M6 isn't until 2024.

There wasn't much rumble over Leica introducing the limited edition Leica Q2 "Dawn" by Seal. Granted, it wasn't an M body. Is there really a market for 500 of those?

This is just disappointing.
4800 Euros (VAT is usually included in Europe) is not significantly cheaper than the two cameras still in production, M-A and MP, just a slight discount. Limitation to 500 means the collectors will suck up all of the production in no time, nothing will remain for the ordinary Leica- shooter of years to come. I´m glad I have an MP and an M3 to be happy with.

Yes, of course. Nothing wrong with selling cameras. Leica cannot compete on price and play the volume game. It would not work.

Yes, but...

Our local little Leica dealer used to organize a ride to Solms once a year to visit the Leica headquarters. While we were well cared for by a Leica representant, our cameras and lenses received a free check and clean at the customers service.
The new headquarters in Wetzlar we visited only once, then this offering was suspended. A couple of years later our local dealer was kicked out of the Leica business- too small a partner for the now much bigger Leica brand. Of the ca. 20 Leica photogs around him only 2 remained sticking to the red dot. I myself will not buy any digital Leica again, the M9 was hideous.

What I want to say, Kaufmann has changed the brand philosophy from craftmanship to boutique style, with even higher prices than before. It seems to work, there are enough rich people in the world (China has grown to a very important market for Leica) who consider a Leica as a symbol of wealth and style.
As we were told in Wetzlar, the film Ms are nowadyas built on demand only. When a certain number of orders is reached, they make a new batch. So it would not be necessary to play the volume game.

I am well aware they went the boutique route. It worked for them. Low to no volume dealers were not getting the job done I guess. I mean Leica turned some of the better dealers into Leica boutiques. It is unfortunate, but it worked. Times change. I only buy used digital Leica many many years after they are released. I like to use a digital rangefinder sometimes. I wish I did not.

Rangefinder cameras are of the past. A concept of almost 100 years ago! Save your money!
