Camera and Coffee

Yes Andrew, though the hood is by Photax and not an Olympus. The camera looks well. The aperture and shutter speed rings are very stiff however and the wind-on lever continually winds so I have to remember not to wind on twice or I lose a frame. Takes great pix though.

Andrew, being the knowledgeable guy you are, do you know if it's possible to 'lubricate' the rings without the need for dismantling?

Paul,
I just had my SP CLA'd and repaired by a very good technician in the Northwest. If you'd like his name and email just PM me.
It's sure is nice when it works like new ~ ; - )

I have in fact had a quote from a UK repairer. 45-60GBP + VAT. Thats about 84-113USD + 17.5%!

If I could 'loosen' the aperture/shutter rings the prblem with the wind-on could wait.

KUVVY! I FIXED THAT WIND PROBLEM ON MY OLYMPUS SP!

The problem is a hair-thin spring that holds a clutch; the spring (used to be) under constant tension. Take off the bottom plate, wind it, you will get the idea. Mind the rewind button, it will fall out. I took a spring from a parts camera (has to be just the right shape) and replaced the broken one. As the spring was froma Minolta Hi_matic 11, it was a good bit thicker than the original and will not have the same problem! Shot several rolls of fil to verify operation then sold it. Even though Olympus cameras have terrific optics, you have to wonder why they could not hire a Mechanical Engineer that knew what they were doing.

The shutter/aperture ring may free up with a little alchohol or Ronsonol squirted near the rings then operate the rings. My Konica S2 from Rob and Canonet ASA selector freed up with such a treatment.

Cheers for the info Brian. I will have to wait until I find a camera I can cannibalise for parts. All mine are users at the moment.
Wiil try the alcohol treatment and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Paul, I believe Brian gave a very good description of the wind-on problem. Also, I do not recommend flushing the front barrel with Rosinol or any other fluid. A CLA by Camtech or another reputable Olympus repair facility is the best option. If you are in the UK, I recommend Luton Camera Services in Luton.

P.S. The Zorki 3M arrived yesterday, bringing my Russian arsenal to 3 cameras. I may sell the Zorki 4. While the FED 2, which I bought by accident, has already become a favorite carry anywhere vintage shooter.

Here is a quick snapshot of the R3a with the new 40mm 1.4 lens I took last week while at the ski condo enjoying the expresso next to it. I really like the R3a 40mm combination. I do wish it was slightly wider with framelines for 35mm, but I'll take it as it is 😀 😀

Stephen,
I like that hood, great looking camera, any ski pics???

-18c with a wind chill of about -28c.

That's just terrible!

You need to send that poor, neglected camera to a nice warm place, where it can have a lovely workout by the beach in the sun. Somewhere like Melbourne, Australia... 😀

Gorgeous camera, btw.

Cheers,
Steve

Joe,
Not sure if you got an answer, but B&H Photo has Nikon fit, black soft releases' for $7.50. Their part # NAIR9. That's a standard thread for many cameras.
Good Luck.

Sorry Todd, no ski pics on that trip.

I do have some snowmobile pics I took the weekend prior. Gorgeous weather, lots of snow, and we found some great locations. I have the film in my darkroom waiting to be developed in the next run. I'll try to remembe to post some in my gallery. I'll be going back to the same spots with some medium format stuff when the weather is right.
I'd hike in, but its 60 miles! A real tough day hike in snow shoes 🙂

Here is a preview (taken with a P&S digital). Imagine better weather, visibility, medium format, and hiking to a better vantage point. I can, which is why I want to go back!!!

Stephan,
Beautiful shot of winter. We in the northwest are due to get a little ourselves starting tomorrow.
Got the muk-luks and RF's ready - LOL.

Thanks for the advice Andrew. The estimate I posted earlier was actually from Luton Camera Services. I was just hoping for a cheaper option.

Yashica & Werra

Yashica & Werra

Had a few shots left on a roll of TMax 3200, so time for some 'coffee & camera' shots... (OK, that's clearly NOT coffee, but hey, I can't sleep to well when I drink coffee late in the evening - 'hops blossom tea' is much better for good sleep 😉 )
Those are a Werra Matic and a Yashica Lynx 5000.
