i also see the x100 as a very separate entitiy from the xe-1…i carry it when i want to travel light or when photography is not number one on the priority list.

i bought the fuji 35 lens because there wasn't a 23 available and have kept it this long because it is just so good. luckily, the new 23 is reputed to be as good and it happens to be my favourite focal length…although the 27 is a very close second!
these days i prefer a smaller kit, 2 or 3 lenses and yes, if i have more than that i can leave some home…not hard to figure that one out…

with the fuji kit…i love the 60 and want to keep it. the rest will take care of itself with time…as in the 23 is now available and the 14 is what i have decided to use as a wide…the 18 is great…i like the small size but the 14 has a fov that works better for me.

as far as improving my actual image making…i shoot alot…even more than i speak about gear…i add images to flickr all the time. am i getting better? maybe those who talk about it here can offer some feedbak to me as opposed to lecturing me…sorry but it feels like a lecture.

as far as money is concerned…well i've never made a big salary because i prefer to feel good about what i do to earn money and that doesn't pay well. no complaints on my part.

and yes, i did ask for people's thoughts…about fuji gear, not my lifestyle or budgeting skills. i think it's a bit presumptuous to judge others…

and so…my plan is to sleep on it and in the morning check the local pro shop to see if they have any 23s in stock. if they do i might buy one and put 2 of my lenses in the classifieds and hope they sell.
and then wait a bit and start work on getting the 14 back in my kit.

As I have now of recent, entered the Fuji X world. Amazing. Waiting on an X-E2 and being sucked into the vortex. I love great photographs like the next guy (I have even taken a few) but some of us are gear-heads. I, myself, am a functional gear-head. This means I am still able to lead a "normal" life. LOL!! A few moments ago I received a PM from jsrockit (who will, I hope, forgive me for going public), about my use of the word "bully". I began expecting such a message from somebody about one second after I posted my post, but I just decided to let it stay there.

My use was that of Teddy Roosevelt (amongst others), who would say 'bully!', the context being a lot like 'good for you!' or 'damn straight!'. Of course these days with the alleged professional media reporting an epidemic of bullying it is easy to forget that language is a living, changing thing. I should have prefaced my use with a Roosevelt aside. Perhaps my vocabulary is larger than jsrockit's, perhaps smaller. In any case it's different. He is, of course, no bully, and I had no intent to imply or accuse that.

This might also serve as another data point showing how the internet, even though it makes it easier to talk to others does a pretty poor job of helping us to communicate. Emoticons are a lousy substitute for nuance 😉.

jsrockit, you misunderstood me, and I apologise. Apologies also for going public with your PM.

You prefer a 35 to a 50, then why don't you just use the X100 you already own? Is f/2 really not fast enough, you need a slightly faster and much larger and heavier lens?

You want to sell a lens you aren't using so much, in order to buy another lens at a focal length you'd just be duplicating?

It seems like your end game in this is just to go through as much equipment and savings as possible, with no regard to making better photographs. Here's a suggestion you are free to value as much or little as you want: stop trying to get better equipment. What you have is already far beyond what almost all of the world's greatest photographers had access to, and even ONE of your cameras is plenty good enough for a talented photographer. Stop worrying about it. Get your head out of the battery compartment and focus on making better images. Take the money you'd be wasting on this crap and open a savings account.

I'm writing with only the best intentions, and I don't know you in the least bit, but that's my recommendation.

I'm sorry Joe, but I kind of agree with this fellow. Not to be mean spirited of course but it seems you are always tempted by new glass or another focal length. The way I see it at least.

Right now I'm having a GAS attack for a fuji GL690. And while the camera doesn't usually fetch M system prices its still enough for me to think twice about dropping the cash. My idea in my head behind the idea of getting the camera is saying, "You'll shoot more of that 120, big neg!" or "just think of the DOF!" But I already own a bronica system that ive been piecing together every now and then when the stars align and I pick up an extra piece.

I decided to combat the "shoot more 120 with the new camera" idea by actually shooting more 120 with the bronica. This whole month ive set aside all cameras and solely use my bronica for everything. This way I have time to think about my impulses, get better shooting with the gear I already own, and achieve the same goal that I would have wanted to do with the new camera, shoot big neg!

Maybe you should try that dicipline. You must have bought the lenses you would be replacing for a reason. Rethink what inspired you then and take one lens out for a week straight, or two weeks. Maybe you'll fall in love again.

If you like the 35mm focal length, get the 23. You won't need another 35mm equiv. But I would say keep the 35mm as well - its such a good 50 equiv. Just save up a little longer. I get the 35mm equiv focal length preference - I really do. I have been using the 35mm (50 equiv) for about a year now and very little else, and I just don't get used to it. As soon as I slapped the 23mm on the xp1, it was like everything felt right again. But I would have some patience and keep the 35. Don't sell and chop so much - nomsayin?

I sold my X100 a week ago. My decision was not based on any dissatisfaction with the X100. I felt the X100 would just sit on the shelf now that I started using the 23/1.4 XF on the X-Pro 1. And, it's easy to pick up another X100 if it turns out I made a mistake.

The X100 sale was also based on my assumption that a silver XE-1 or 2 with the 27/2.8 (or the 18/2) would be a simple, unobtrusive camera for travel or candid use. Of course the 23 mm field of view is different than the 27's.

Besides the FOV difference, what is it about the XE-1 with a compact lens that makes it less suitable than the X100 as a travel light/small camera? I ask because I am wondering if I should defer or abandon my XE-1/2 plans.

i saw it from a shop window, compared to the smaller body of the XE2 the lens looked massive even without the hood, however i did not get a chance to handle it. the sigma 35 1.4 which i have handled balanced very well on a 6D.

I agree with giving that the length of the 23/1.4 XF is not an issue. It does not feel awkward to use in any way. I do hold the camera a bit differently as I did when used a 85mm lens on my Zeiss Ikon M body.

The only issue for me is it I have to pay a bit more attention when I want to quickly remove or replace the camera from my shoulder bag.

right now, i'm using the 18/27/35/60 combination of lenses.
i recently added an x100 to my kit and find that i'm using the 27 much less than before. if i want small i grab the x100 where before i was using the X-E1 with the 27.

a 35mm fov has always been preferred to a 50mm pov (by me that is)…so it would make sense to use the 23 more than the 35.
i have played with the 23 and the size does not bother me all that much…yes, it's on the large side but is a comfortable handful...

so…i'm thinking of selling the 27 and the 35 and getting the 23…a nice 3 lens kit…and keeping the x100 of course for travelling light/small.

any thoughts?
anyone else making this move or thinking about it?

if money were no concern then i would just add the 23 and be done with it.

You could also sell (almost) everything and start over with a Sony a7 and your Canon LTM glass. Just saying...

Ill put it this way. The sigma is 660g, the fuji is 301g. It handles beautifully - imo anyway. The 35mm f1.4L always felt too big and long on my 5d. Not so with the 23 on the xp.

to me a good combo is X-E1 (or X-Pro1 or X-E2 for that matter) with 14/2.8 and 35/1.4, and for the 35mm field of view an X100 (or X100s).

this way you cover 21, 35 and 50, and has the benefit of shooting completely silent and with a smaller camera.

this is alot simpler than you give credit for…it's a change of focal length…i'm not looking for a magic bullet or expect my level of talent to change…but i do expect to 'see' a little bit wider with the 23 as opposed to the 35!

i tried the 23 on my xe-1 at the local camera trade show a few weeks back and it felt fine to me.

i'd rather not have both the 23 and the 35 and i would prefer the 23…simple.
the x100 is a completely different camera/feel to me than the xe1 with any lens, including the 27, which i really like.
i would prefer a smaller kit to a bigger kit.

anyone here have more than 1 pair of shoes?
