March Challenge: Photo and no equipment buying

Today is March 1st Ladies and Gentlemen, in case such an event slips by you.
I haven't bought anything at all so far, and itw asn't difficult as I was on the road for two days. There are over 1000 views to this thread, so there should be many people being motivated.

I've managed to keep my wallet closed as far as photo gear goes as well. Thursday will be the test ... a friend wants me to go to the camera store and inspect some cameras he's interested in and pick one up for him if I see a good one. I'll be surrounded by temptation.

The last two days in February I made two purchases to feed my new appetite for Pentax. Three Takumars, an ESII and a Spotmatic for parts. But I won't be buying anything in March. No really...

Why do you people keep buying cameras? I have three fantastic user cameras for different situations, which is about two cameras too many.

Recently somebody was 'complaining' that the Classified forum in here was now password-protected or something. I never even noticed that there was a Classified forum before.

I do not wish to buy and I do not wish to sell. I want to use what I have.

Jon,

didn't you notice that "cold turkey " remark somebody made? You are preaching to junkies here, that is useless ! :bang:

"Zwei Seelen wohnen , ach, in meiner Brust, doch leider bin ich nur die Eine ! "J. W. v. Goethe

Roughly translated and loosing the magic of Goethes language completely, it says that he got two souls , unfortunately he is only the other one ! 😀

Regards,

Peppo
Not in, hasn't bought any gear since two years. Excepted chem, film and lab equipment. Spent the money for travels instead.

I'm late, but I'm in too. Hopefully my co-worker will not find that Great Wall MF SLR I asked him to keep an eye out for while he's in China... :bang:

Funny thing, as I was reading this thread, I was thinking about the post someone made about shoving your gear into a cardboard box and only pulling stuff out when you need it. I did that a couple of months ago and so far, I only have my Pentax 645, K1000, Bessa R, and my digital camera outside the box.

I anticipate a massive sell-off coming soon.

Not yet to be considered a looser in regard of the original proposal, I have sent today a C41 roll to the lab (final check for an Oly AF-1), but unfortunately there is some darkroom and FSU gear looking for a decent home...

Hope someone can resist more than I will!!

Ernesto

Since the mandate is "buy" and not "acquire" I am still in. My Dad's Care Package arrived today (his Leica gear and some unexpected goodies) -- he's a good old Dad 😀.

P. S. one of the "extras" was an Olympus XA2; had to add another marque to the sig line...

I'll ask a question in a form posed in some other threads: if February is a month and March is a month, and I didn't buy equipment in February, does that make me a nonbuyer for March?

😉

Hey -- I accumulated points in the past few months...

Looks like I'm still in. Unless that other member here who was selling a Canon 35 finally tells me the price he wants for it and the 100/3.5 he had for sale. Blah. I'm kinda sorry that I need stuff, but I'd like to get my Canon kit sorted once and for all.

Hello,
I am proposing to make (informally) March the month in which we try to take more excellent photos and try not to add more equipment on our buying list.

I'm glad I'm not the first one to be beaten by the second part of Raid's challenge.
BUT, there is another part to it that seems to have been mostly overlooked. So I am still half in.
I really do buy stuff to use but this is a hobby for me so I don't feel especially bad about what I bought and if I wanted to get weasely about the challenge, I did'nt actually buy it in March but I won't get it for another week or so...
And I have been thinking about the first part of the challenge and have a couple of ideas for some photo projects.
Haven't finalized my thoughts yet but will spend this month(at least) a bit more specific (tried not to say "focused" here 😀 ) about my shooting.

Oh my, I was supposed to buy my Canon digital SLR and lenses before today, :bang: :bang: I forgot there are only 28 days in Feb.... 😱
so do I have to wait until April before I spend 6k on my new system?????

Many of us enjoy the photographs in a gallery, the favorite book of photographs, the sitting at the pavement cafe waiting for the right moment, and the hiking for an hour for the right view.
Real cameras doing what they were made to do. Real lenses being used use for images not lines per millimetre sort of tests.
Lets talk about photographs, images, art and opinions. Opinions about images not about whether the M3 is better than the M6.

Jon,
oh , really another sample of this rare species !!?? Salve, collega !!
I thought I am almost alone here among all these toy addicted here ! 😉 You have to expect tho that your standpoint will be considered as extremely BORING by the very most of this bunch of gearoholics here.

For those with a limited humor, her begins the joke :
Some of them I imagine as drooling in front of their monitors about any new ebay offers all day long, in a kinda pre-comatose mental condition, skinny, hollow chekked, feverish, sometimes howling in the pain of indecison.

Poor folks, they will die from malnutrition one day sourrounded by mountains of lensboxes and tests shots, on which you can recognize their dogs and cats, their kids, their motorbikes, details of their backyards, hundreds of people shot on the street from behind and of course, their cameras !! 😀 😀 😀
They' d best tattoo Peppo's elegant Goethe quote on their forheads so they could see it each morning while they shave their furrowed faces. 😛
And here ends the joke !

Enuff of this sorta mockery, they will burn me at the stake for that anyway, shiver !

More serious now: I am not in either, no, my probs are different. I own six cameras and four of them I don't need at all, which means the once promised affluent society has come true for me, at least when it comes to cameras. I haven't bought any gear since more than a year . In one case ( a super wide zoom for my SLR) I came quite close to a buy but changed my mind later, because I realized that it would mean just one pound more to lug around for a very limited use.

While I tried to decide about this nice-to-have buy I noticed again that thinking about any new purchases leads my mind to the opposite direction, away from photography. Maybe that is the worst effect of this, worse than the wasted money.

My probs are different, I often have a creative blockade, not able to think up an interesting project which keeps my mind busy. Not that I would not find any ideas, but not enuff and not fast enuff, a kinda foreceps delivery each time.

So I thought about a ( sticky) thread in the forum, where we could organize a kinda project idea interchange but somehow I think this is a too "clubby idea" , something like this bizarre HCB contest gallery ?

It's a personal thing IMO, one has to find out oneself what one wants to "say".
These clubby things are more a kinda training, you got a weight and you must lift it. Other opinions ?

Bertram

Darkroom equipment should not count. It can only be used to make prints.

Joe put up the March Madness Mega-sale with some give-away prices.

Raid, the Angel on one shoulder whispering "you do not need more equipment" and the other shoulder "Buy-it, Buy-It! BUY-IT! You KNOW you want it".
