New 50mm f1.1

Five Guys Burgers

Ha! It's made by some unpronounceable company in Shenzhen, "People's" "Republic" of China, that presently manufactures LED lights; probably sold poisoned dog food and ran missile parts to the NORKs and Iran before that (just a playful guess).

I'm just so intrigued now that I'm torn whether to buy one, walk my dog or watch grass grow.

Down there they also make iPhones, iPads and almost all known gadgets for the rest of us. It's the cyberpunk capital of China.

Sounds more like the place a lens like this would come from.

I've got a feeling, that the diagram printed on the box is just a ripoff. You can see a certain element being blacked out...like it's a poor photoshop paint over.

I'm rather curious on the claim of this 7/6 lens being a "Sonnar formula". Would really be something if it's true.

Nice Ben. i'm looking forward to your comparison. I've wanted the e58 Noctilux from the jump, but could never afford one. If this one is close or even in the adjacent neighborhood I'm gonna get one!

Me too.
I think I will take the plunge next week and see how it stacks up against my Noctilux.

I offered $301. We shall see. They seem to have mass-produced this lens, and sellers have many lenses to sell. Their 35/2 is cheap ($169) and also their M 4/3 25/1.8 ($69). They have on their website a 50mm 0.95 M. The latter may cost $1200 or so. Are they copying with 3D the design of Leica lenses?

I doubt they are copying any existing lenses. Designing and manufacturing common camera lenses these days is rather routine affair optically. Anyone with a credit card can purchase powerful raytracing software that runs on personal computers which would have have required a mainframe computer running in a research lab in an earlier era. Mass produced, consumer grade lenses are not as hard to make as they once were either - all the equipment to do it be purchased if one has a big enough bank account. I can imagine there are companies in Germany that would even build you a turnkey factory to do it.

Wait 30 days; then either the lens sells for $250 or for $550.

Good plan.

Besides, I have a really nice Sonnetar 50/1.1 so I have all the character I need for now.

Truthfully a 1.1 aperture is really wasted on me. I can hardly see well enough to focus my Summilux wide open on my M3!

That is why my favorite lens is the Planar 50/2. At least I have a better keeper ratio with that lens.

😀

EDIT - I lie, actually my favorite lens is still the Elmar 50/3.5!!
