To me, it's wide-angle. Any. In fact, I sometimes view the 50mm lens like a small telephoto.

Oh, and my cameras have both wide-angle lenses. One the Elmarit, the other one the Hexanon. I can understand the 50mm being a favorite, but I tried to like it to no avail... 🙁

Long live the 35!! 😉

...the 75mm for my mamiya 6.

hasta la vista, voyez-vous plus tard, daskorava, fino al prossimo tempo, auf wiedersehen, and later y’all

I'm also surprised that 50 is a little ahead of 35. Maybe the 28 folks just make a lot of noise, making it seem that there are a lot of them.

Aside from the 50mm being a very versitile focal length, there are many more (affordable) 50's to be found than 35's.

I think you and OldNick are right - there might be a couple of factors that really plan to the favour of the 50mm:

1. They're much cheaper than the corresponding 35's of equal performance (generally)
2. There is much more choice amongst 50s, especially if you're looking for a fast lens

Strangely I shot with a 50 most of the time when I had an SLR but with the RF I'm much more comfortable with a 35. Nevertheless I'm constantly tempted to get a second 50 mainly because they're generally half the price of a similar 35.

Alas I'm stuck saving for a 35 'lux ASPH when I could have a 50 'cron, ZI 50 and Canon 50 for the same (or less).

Actually I use the 35 asph 'Lux most - but on the R-D1, so my field of view is 50. The 40 Nokton was my favourite lens on the M6 (or still is, but honestly, haven't used it much since the Epson came in).

I like to carry a camera with the Nikkor 5cm/2 whenever I can, but I also like the Canon 28mm/3.5 because it is so tiny.

Raid:

Your comments persuaded me to get a 28/ 3.5 over the 2.8.

Thanks,

Bill

i have to say that i'm sort of surprised with these poll results.

i thought that 35mm would be the runaway favourite, followed by 50 but with 28 showing more of a presence.

i know many people talk about using a 50 but i thought they were just more vocal and not more in numbers.

is this what others might have expected also?

joe

I thought the same. But remember, the favorite daily carry camera for many RFF members is a fixed lens camera with a 50mm lens. They don't have an option.

Then there are us geezers who learned photography when 50mm was the "standard" lens and 35mm was a wide angle, and developed their photo eyes accordingly. I've gone so far as to mark the 50mm extension point on my digital P&S lenses and set the lens there when I start up. And even more traditionally, use the zoomers the Intelligent Designer put on the end of my legs to move closer or further as the photo opportunity demands.

For walking around it's the 28 3.5 skopar for sure. I love the feel of it and the photos are great. If it's going to turn dark at some point when I'm out, I'll trade that for a 35mm Summicron but I'm partial to the 28 these days.

assuming that you have one consistant favourite...what is your favourite everyday carry lens?

i have included only the focal lengths that i might use, so if you're fav is not on the list, sorry.

i have carried the 28 at times (current favourite), the 35 and the 50, and i guess the 40 for a short time too. for my purposes here if you use a 40 then click on the 35 choice.

40
I've been using my CM more and more. 40 is just perfect.
Cheers,
