The best camera is one that still works!
One thing I'm very hot on is fractious individuals who seem to enjoy making combative, sarcastic posts.
There are a couple of notables around at the moment and I really don't get it ... what do you get from it?

But, some people think her policies were correct, so that is the source of the problem. Those of us not in lockstep with Labour Party or Progressive ideology get slammed almost in every thread where the politics gets discussed. I prefer to say a person is misguided than call them evil or stupid, and I apologize to the OP in that thread for going off topic. And yeah, I am a hothead.... and I've been insulted personally at times over the years, but the mods do a good job cleaning up the broken bar furniture...
As a conservative I feel like a turd in the punch bowl around here a large portion of the time, and conservatives buy bags and rangefinders just like the progressives and socialists...

Gear and photography go together to some degree. I don't mind a little gear talk, especially when members help others solving gear problems. The occasional [insert camera brand] p*rn thread is o.k. too.
People have the ability to choose what threads to read, so there should be no reason to say "There is too much gear talk." Don't participate if you don't like it. Start your own photography thread. Just respect others wishes. If a member starts a photography thread, then don't talk about gear other than providing information that helps the thread.
Politics should stick to documentation of a political situation, or discussions about politics affecting photography. The same for religion. We are a large community with different points of view and leaving politics and religious beliefs out of the discussions will go a long way towards community harmony.

I like to read about gear. I used to read the original Cameraquest pages when there was very little else online about old cameras.
When I bought something I wanted to research many years ago, the search engines referred me to RFF, which is how I found out about it.
I must say, in the early days of RFF, there were many more really knowledgable people with real in-depth information about esoteric gear. I wish there was more of it now.
I find nothing wrong with being a gear-head camera collector. There is no crime in really liking to buy cameras and lenses, and not really being a "great artist". Most people can't be.

Think that is pretty well said Al. Live and let live is the way I try to live. Maybe I have a simplistic view on life but I would rather concentrate on my life rather than try to convince someone that I am right and they are wrong. Agree also with Keith, there are a few here that like a fight. I am here because it relaxes me and there are so many more people here know what I am am trying to learn.

Positively this attitude has no place here.
There are forum sections for gear and sections for dicussion about what you can actually produce when using it. As always, buying a tool is much easier than using it and producing a result you are proud of the share and ask for feedback.
This might be an obvious explantion why there is more talk abut gear than about photography but everyone is free to choose what to read and where to contribute.
I value a lot of the technical input that is being shared here and I also like the gallery "pick of the week" threads. The "Monochrome best pics" thread has accumulated a lot of stunning photographs and attracted a lot of views but more importantly it has been a free of any p...ing contest attitude, as far as I can tell.
I like this place 😉.

I do believe a vast majority likes RFF just the way it is, and I'm one of them.
One thing that bugs me (and this plagues all forums too btw) is sustained off-topic posts that diverge from the spirit of the OP.
I have no qualms about civil political dialogue as long as the thread title and OP reflect this.

Exactally. & thus far this thread here is how a political discussion (with photo's) should be. This Helen reminds me so much of the OWS photo's Eric shot over on flickr. Eric showed me how much our US News was so full of lies & propaganda. I hope this kind of documentation of happenings around the world never disappear from RFF.

All of these thing are a part of RFF.
Since I first visited here late in 2005 the pace of change throughout the field of photogaphy has constantly accelerated. We RFF members have helped each other deal with the impact of the turbulence. This is also good.

am preferring to read and discuss about new or new-old gear only, as it usually stays on topic. e.g. technical facts are less debatable or subject to personal tastes. dont want to sound like a jerk but am not respecting anonymous opinions about photography/design/styles/etc much, and am trying not to offer those as anonymous either.
talk politics? why not in separate section, as long as it stays there and does not flood the front page for instance.

Put them under the anonymity of a car, or a web forum, and they can behave in the craziest way, and the level of fine tuned communication offered from a car or a web talk is very low.
So, just as I wouldn't like my roads to be without laws and a good law enforcement system, I'm happy that RFF has "safety measures" to avoid inevitable crashes, and an active moderation.
No tolerance to intolerance.
