Ditto, Cutly. I'd also like to see how the CV Heliar matches up with these other lenses. My guess is that if you put prints created by all these lenses up on a wall, you'd have a very difficult time seeing a difference in "quality". Different "look", but "quality"? Hmmm...
I've never seen any sort of "prints on the wall" test ... tough to do on the web. But until I can see physical prints, I'll keep my $$ in the bank and continue to have a great time with my CV lenses, including the 50 heliar.

Jamie,
Send me your Heliar, and I will gladly add some comparisons with the Summilux. How else can we get such a comparison?

that would be great..

Raid, Instead we need to have a giant gathering of RFF members... a giant "beer & gear"-fest. The gathering could include a "salon" in which members could put real prints up on a real wall and we then could ogle all those summilux-sired images.
And we could have a smaller room for posting lesser images created with CV and other lesser lenses. How about it.... Florida as a suitable meeting spot?

I am ready to start any day packing up the lenses if anyone wants their lenses back A.S.A.P. There is no problem for me to do this. Just let me know how much longer you can survive without your beauties.

Jamie,
You asked the question regarding the Heliar, and I offered you to have it compared to other lenses. Move quickly if you really dare.
Your suggested Beer and Gear lens comparison gathering may result in fuzzy conclusions based on how much beer the participants will be consuming. In the end, nobody would care which lens does what.

Jamie,
not sure if I created the impression of CV lenses being any lesser than any other lenses. Let me repeat that I see the Nokton to come out of this test as well as the later Summilux and new Nikkor Millenium.
In any case, we could do a small print on the wall test here (in the bay) before/at our next gathering.
Cheers,
Roland.

Roland,
You stated that the CV Nokton was one of the top 3 lenses.

Roland, excellent idea... "beer, gear, and PRINTS!"
Damn... now I have to get up on the learning curve for my new printer!

Such a meeting is good for the SF RFF crowd, but others will not see how great the Heliar is. :bang:

We could always scan the prints and share

So you make prints from the scans and then make scans from the prints!

You mean we have to start thinking about a "medium-fast 50" test?

Christ... now you expect me to learn how to use my new Nikon scanner?? At this rate, I'll never get outside to take a picture again!

It is much easier to put the heliar in a parcel....
Enjoy the lens and the meeting and tell us about it later on.
I was interested in the heliar 50/3.5 LTM, but the Nikon S mount Heliar looks ugly.

I emailed Zeiss about the focus optimization of the modern Sonnar in S-mount and received a prompt reply:
"All copies of the S-mount Sonnar T* 1,5/50 are adjusted to minimize focus shift at f/1.5. In practical use, the focus shift at other f-stops is covered by the depth-of-field."

Sample Variation, Classic Sonnars only
Sample Variation, Classic Sonnars only
When doing the comparisons above, I always picked what I subjectively thought was the best sample picture of a given set of lens samples.
To show what sample variation exists, I am now comparing a center crop, in which flare, bokeh and resolution can be assessed, of the wide open Rollei picture, taken only with classic Sonnar variants. Some small contrast and white balance and additional unsharp mask applied in PSP (but identical for all pics).

Enjoy,

The Opton does very well here. The Nikkor T shows a surprising amount of flare.
There is a large variability between the flare performance of the J3 lenses.
Note the crossed lines on the white strip of paper attached to the Rolleiflex.
Lenses showing flare do not show the crossed lines.
All lenses are reasonably sharp, showing good resolution.
The writing on the Steve Nicks tape can barely be read. This is also a resolution test area.
I placed the video boxes all across the table toallow center and corner resolution testing.
The J3 with last two digits 63 is doing very well. The crosshair is very sharply shown.
